South Yorks mayoral race.

Recommended Posts

The mayor was supposed to come with additional finance and powers from central government but since Doncaster and Barnsley pulled out of the deal this mayor will have no budget and no powers. the mayor will just get to take a wage for nothing, any candidate should be looking to give at least a portion of their wage back until the other South Yorkshire councils come in line. I wouldn't trust a Labour politician with this position as their councillors (all the constitutient councils are Labour majority) have ruined the deal.

In my opinion Sheffield CC have ruined the deal, they have basically shafted the rest of South Yorkshire ( and themselves , accidentally) over HS2 .

In Doncaster, every elected member ...Labour, Tory and Independent voted against the Sheffield City Region option, so it's not a question of party politics,

Ideas are all well and good but when there isnt the money to pay for them....

what you need are ideas which fit the budgetary constraints.

i dont think it is the council's fault.

the government has made it quite clear that the only deal in the table is the sheffield region deal. sheffield council have followed the money.

if the council were to walk away from this and support the "one yorkshire" alternative then it seems the government would walk away and no one would get anything.

as to the wider issue of whether or not regionalisation is a good thing then done correctly it probably is.

there would be economies of scale from merging some of the functions which are currently handled by the individual councils. also, a large number of things which councils do or people think they should do are handles by quangos appointed by westminster, bring some of those under regional control wouldn't be such a bad idea.

there is also the idea that a regional administration would be able to target government money far more effectively than a civil servant sat in an office in whitehall.

what we really need is a national conversation about how we want government to work. piecemeal changes like these just fracture the country more and increase the power of the westminster government.

there has been lots of talk about english parliaments and a more federal structure for the UK perhaps we should go for that but that conversation should also include regional government and a proper allocation of powers to the federal parliament, national parliament, regional administration and local council.

If the other South Yorkshire councils can't see past their nose on other issues because of HS2 they aren't representing the best interests of their constituents.

They can see clearly past their nose....Sheffield CC behaviour over HS2 has caused a complete loss of faith and trust, in the opinion of many Sheffield has actively campaigned against the wider interests of South Yorkshire in the most expensive infrastructure project in living memory.

The South Yorkshire councils signed the devolution deal in March 2016, Sheffield council had previously been campaigning for an HS2 station in the city centre since 2013/14. Why did they sign the deal in the first place if HS2 was causing so much of an issue?

Yes any new station should have been at Meadow hall so Barnsley and Rotherham had easier access .

The toss pots in Sheffield Town Hall think that they are the be all and end all in South Yorks .

If you're going to libel someone it would be nice to know upon what you base your accusation.

There has been loads of reports in newspapers of Richard Caborn( among others) offering Government connections for cash , one was around March 2010 when a price of £2500 plus EXPENCIES ? was mentioned to an undercover fake lobby company .

Gordon Brown said at the time that he was appalled at such behavior .

In 2008 Caborn was paid £75000 per year by the nuclear industry again as a consultant

He was also mentioned in the expenses scandal when it seems as though he claimed for various things that any one in an ordinary job would have to pay for themselves.

All these little sweeteners( if that is what they were) are easy to find on line and one must make ones own mind up as to the accuracy of the reporting of them .

And the deal with his beloved Sheffield United's owner to run the OLP too.
