South Yorks mayoral race.

Recommended Posts

A hustings is a simple idea. A group of candidates who wish to attend and come together on a public platform and give their report of why people should vote for them. The public can then ask them questions. It is a democratic convention. If a candidate attends and is not allowed to speak but all for the others in attendance can speak its not good. What would have happened if Dan Jarvis had been told he couldn't speak.

The NHS is an important issue. Some say the most important issue. Naveens election address in the mayoral booklet, delivered to all voters in South Yorkshire outlines the terrible destruction of the NHS with specific examples. For instance in Sheffield they are trying to close the city centre walk in centre, in Barnsley take away the emergency stroke service. There is along list and its all to save £571 million over the next few years. How many other services will cut and/or given to private companies.

Naveen is campaigning as part of the South Yorkshire Save our NHS party to stop the vicious attack on our NHS services, NHS users and NHS staff. Have read you have all got a mayoral election booklet and see if any of the other candidates mention the NHS at all.

Infact its well known that Dan Jarvis supports the Tory cuts to the NHS . He has publically stated that he supports the so called 'Integrated care system', the Tory goverments secret way of bring in ( more) private companies to run NHS services, operating for profit yo pay its share holders not for the patient. Why would a Labour MP support this policy? No Labour MP in South Yorkshire has spoken out against the closures of NHS revices and buildings and the selling of of NHS property. Why? - who gets the cash?

While I agree that if you're going to hold a meeting for candidates contesting the Mayoral election that all candidates be given a platform the NHS will not be a remit for the Mayor. It will not be covered by their powers or budgets. The NHS is a central Govt / national, not regional matter.

But had Naveen been allowed to speak, this could have been highlighted to the audience.

Actually there are no powers at all except for a say on buses! Once there is agreement there will be a consultation and negotiation what they will be. I heard that a survey was done and results given to public by centre for cities and we said the most important issue we thought needed addressing was health and yet Naveen is the only one who not only mentions it but makes it his platform. Others simply ignored what we thought was important. As a major political figure he will highlight this and shine a light on this and ask the other leaders why they are not opposing the cuts to services.

Secret? Hardly.

The whole scheme makes a lot of sense. Sadly, the uninformed just see "NHS" and "private" and put two and two together and get the wrong answer.

It does not make sense I have talked to people who work in the NHS and followed the political debate on this. These ICS are supposed to implement STPs which cut services to be able to deliver services within a fixed pot of money and not according to need. One of the Financial Directors of a local NHS Foundation trust and also another FD of the CCG ( Clinical commissioning group ) said that over 70% of finance directors said that the STPs would not deliver clinical outcomes and were Purely a cost cutting exercise. Also they said the next step would be putting a private company to oversee the ICS. This means more health money being diverted to dividends and consequent loss of care quality and more fragmentation. I think the phrase I have heard used is taking the N out of NHS.

Devolution is all a giant con anyway. In the consultation for a S Yorks Mayor only 20% of people in Doncaster bothered to respond and only 22% in Barnsley.

Nobody gives a flying one about a South Yorkshire Mayor but you are getting one anyway, like it or not.

So 3 days to go and apart from the flyers through everyones door do we know any more about the candidates? did anyone go to the Radio Sheffield event last week?

edit - just seen someone point out that the booklets that were produced were printed in West Yorkshire. Nice of SCR to support local businesses within its region (and the fact that they have a printing department available to them within the same building)

Is there a percentage of the vote needed to activate the position.

Could it be if only 2% voted that the winner becomes mayor

Either way, two-jobs Dan Jarvis won (what a surprise) but has no mayoral function at present other than drawing his CT-payer-funded salary.

What salary would that be?

What salary would that be?

This one (from https://sheffieldcityregion.org.uk/about-us-governance-policy/about-the-mayoral-election/ but my added underlining):

There is not currently a salary attached to the position of Sheffield City Region mayor. This may change in the future, should agreement be reached on further powers being devolved from Government.

So that would be "no salary", then.

Stirrer!
