Are Calais Migrants OUR Problem?

Stating France and Germany take 3-4 the number of refugees and that we should ‘do more’ implies we aren’t taking nearly enough. Can we support many more though? Apparently Kent social services are overwhelmed by the the numbers they have to deal with.  Whilst people are sleeping rough and struggling in this country do we not have humanitarian responsibility to them too?

No.

I am pointing out to you that many take the opportunity of taking asylum in other European countries and we being on the fringe of Europe, and of course having the barrier of the channel take less responsibility.

Some would have it that they all want to come here

Kent and other coastal areas take the brunt for obvious reasons but could be much helped by the Government.

And yes we could do much more regarding homeless people

The cash is all borrowed cash. The Government has borrowed record amounts to look after out own people due to Covid-19. Now is the time to cut the foreign aid budget and sort out our own problems. Illegal immigrants shouldn't be our problem.

You’d have sent Jewish refugees back to Germany in a heartbeat in the 30s wouldn’t you.

They are everybody’s problem ,but many are desperate individuals and families living in the direst of circumstances.

Foreign aid is also an essential, but regrettably some of the recipients seem less worthy than others.

Maybe we should start by clearing up the mess we’ve made. Then, we could embark upon  a foreign policy that doesn’t contribute to the production of yet more asylum seekers.

Then,  you might have a point.

That wont please the racists, actually solving an issue. They just want to complain about a problem, where there is no solution.

An amnesty perhaps, they will be livid.

Regardless of this, there is a limit to the number of refugees that can be supported and this burden should be shared proportionally and sustainably between different countries.   The UK cannot simply take the same number as say, France and Germany because of the geographical size of the UK and the existing high population density. As others have stated, very many refugees do not seek to come to the UK but that does mean we should take in ALL that do.  There are so many people in poverty and homeless in the UK that are in desperate need of help; we have a humanitarian duty to those people and are not responsible for all the victims of the worlds problems.

There's 79 million refugees in the world apparently.

If we as the 6 th biggest GDP can't handle the 5000 who have crossed the channel it does not  say much for our capabilities.

Not even the ones we helped create?
