Are Calais Migrants OUR Problem?

Recommended Posts

The point is that many  illegal migrants do not apply for asylum.

If they do then Patel and her Home Office are supposedly now in a position to grant asylum or not on a case by case basis.

So how is that going along with the assertions that we are now in a position to control our borders?

The reason why many illegal migrants don't apply for asylum is because the UK authorities haven't caught up with them.  Controlling our borders has very little to do with the economic migrant problem and the  international refugee agreement.

Going round in circles here.

if illegal economic migrants is a major issue to you then control of our borders as promised by Patel should be welcomed by you. That is if it is any more than just words to appeal to their electorate.

The good September weather has resulted in more record numbers of economic migrants making their way from the French coast to British waters. ITV breakfast news has showed one parked up French police van patrolling 50 miles of French coast.  Apparently Priti Patel hasn't arranged transfer of the further £54 million to the untrustworthy French yet and it won't be given unless they start to make a proper effort to stop these economic migrants leaving the French coast.

Tell you what: France can save itself significantly more than €54m, by not patrolling its northern coast for anyone who wants to leave the country, whether for the UK or wherever else.

No more Sangatte, Grande-Synthe, ‘Jungle’,  etc. camps to police every other month and, with the UK exiting the scope of the Dublin Regs through Brexit, no returns either.

So keep your silver, and save yourself trust issues: win-win-win all-around 🤗

I'd be happy if the French also returned the hundreds of millions of English pounds they have scrounged from the British taxpayer over the years supposedly to prevent economic migrants illegally making their way to England.  I'd be even happier if our own government showed some backbone by withdrawing from the international refugee treaty and arranged for the economic migrants on inflatable boats to be towed back into French waters escorted by the Royal Navy.

"English" pounds, are they different to Pounds sterling? Can they be spent in Wales, or even Scotland?

It must be a nightmare for the authorities finding places for them to stay.  They also have the added burden of the thousands of Afghans who came here from Kabul airport at the end of August.  You don't hear of many pro immigration people offering to let them sleep in their own homes.

Why would that be any sort of solution? These people need appropriate accomodation, not a sleeping bag on someone's lounge floor.

Apparently, there are French maritime regulations which govern what safety precautions a small craft must comply with before it can navigate in French waters, so I presume a skipper (or whoever is in charge of the boat) is commiting an offence and liable to arrest, or at least to terminate the voyage. It would be interesting to know whether the authorities are turning a blind eye to this issue. The following forum excerpt discusses small craft safety requirements:

Right, time to take action & stop wasting money by giving it directly to the French!

Either we spend the money returning everyone back to France, (& Belgium & Holland.  You two shouldn't be exempt), as the last safe country people have come from.

Alternatively, set up a migrant processing centre in the British Embassy in Paris where, you'll get a decision as to whether the criteria is met to consider people as either genuine asylum cases, which we accept or economic migrants which we won't.  Again, anyone not using this route, will not be accepted into Britain.  It'd would also benefit the genuine migrants as they wouldn't have to pay people smugglers.

Let's see how the Paris reacts when the 'jungles' along their northern beaches are relocated to the Bois de Boulogne?

The UK cannot legally return any asylum seeker/refugee/immigrant to any country on the Continent, without the agreement of the country in question, unless the returnee is a national of that country. No matter how much money the UK throws at it.

That is why deportation flights operate on a per-country (-destination) basis.

UK embassies already do that (process asylum requests locally) the world over, indeed it is the approach recommended by the HO to would-be refugees (and in the news again very recently, for Afghans ‘with UK ties’ escaped to Pakistan).

There have been such ‘jungles’ in Paris for years already, as staging points before moving onto the northwest coast. They’re usually coalesced about pillars under sections of the Périphérique. You can’t have been in/around Paris much, nor for years and longer, if you ain’t ever seen any.

They’re “cleaned up” (and illegals rounded up, processed, granted asylum or deported, etc)  at least as frequently as the camps in and around Calais.

Under what law/legislation would this be permissible?

What would stop those nations escorting migrants to the UK as a result, making the problem significantly worse for the UK?

...or you could just engage the smallest modicum of common sense!

Given the British Embassy in Paris already does process asylum cases, why isn't this already the case?

If they're not genuine migrants, as many on here claim, why would they bother?

If they are genuine migrants, why take the risk of being turned down when it's better to reach your destination and then apply for asylum?

Who's going to relocate them?

Oh yeah, that's right... no one... :?

We gave the French £54 million, how many patrol boats would that buy?
