Spring Railway Walks 2018

RAILWAY RAMBLES with the PENISTONE LINE PARTNERSHIP

 

You are invited to ‘take the train for a walk !’

 

Organised by the Penistone Line Partnership (PLP) to encourage use of the train service to visit some of South and West Yorkshire’s finest countryside.

 

Support use of the local train services on the scenic ‘Penistone Line’;

Sheffield >Meadowhall >Barnsley >Penistone >Huddersfield.

 

Walks are also held using the Sheffield >Worksop> Retford> Lincoln line ;

the ‘Brigg Line’ Sheffield > Gainsborough Central >Kirton In Lindsey > Brigg >Cleethorpes;

and the Sheffield > Doncaster line via Rotherham Central.

 

Walks are held on the first, third and fifth Saturdays each month.

 

All are welcome to join in these ‘railway rambles’ – the walks are FREE but train or bus fares apply.

Wear suitable clothing & footwear – bring along a packed lunch & drink.

 

Trains depart from SHEFFIELD and MEADOWHALL stations.

Saturday JANUARY 6th 2018 - Dove And Dearne !

A steady away for the new year with this pleasant walk via Wombwell Wood, Broomhill, Darfield and the rivers to Barnsley.

Start: 9.10am at WOMBWELL

Finish: BARNSLEY

Distance: 10 miles.

Saturday JANUARY 20th 2018 - From Halifax With Wool !

Ancient trade routes are the theme today. Packhorses carried wool over the watershed from Derbyshire to the West Riding mill towns. Parts of these ancient ways are still visible today in the landscape and we will traverse Halifax Gate on the way back from Langsett.

Saturday FEBRUARY 3rd 2018 - Don Your Boots!

A walk taking in part of the Don Valley Way via Sprotbrough then via Cusworth Hall before our finish in Donny.

Start: 9.50am at MEXBOROUGH

Finish: DONCASTER

Distance: 9 miles.

Saturday FEBRUARY 17th 2018 - Rotherham’s Rural Fringe !

A walk that explores the countryside in Rotherham’s hinterland, through villages like Woodsetts, North Anston, Todwick and the rolling farmland betwixt them.

Start: 10.20am at SHIREOAKS

Finish: KIVETON BRIDGE

Distance: 8 miles.

Saturday MARCH 3rd 2018 - Watch The Birdie!

This walk will take us up the valley where our feathered friends rule the roost, the RSPB have taken over the Dearne Valley - it’s now a major migration route.

Start: 9.25am at ELSECAR

Finish: WOMBWELL

Distance: 9 miles.

Saturday MARCH 17th 2018 - Old Paths, Old Woods, Old Meadows via Oldfield !

A linear walk from Honley to Berry Brow passing through familiar landscapes.

Start: 9.40am at HONLEY

Finish: BERRY BROW

Distance: 10 miles.

A scenic walk through our lovely Pennine foothills with stunning views and mixed countryside.

Finish: STOCKSMOOR

Distance: 9 miles.

Up, down and roundabout to the home of the badger from the field of the sheep!
