Psalter lane art college - the end

Recommended Posts

No, I dont know the precise, geographical boundaries of your beloved Ecclesall, nor am I particulary interested either. Just like I am not really interested in the magnetic or real north pole - its immaterial- it makes little difference really. In my mind, the general area will do for me.

But Collegiate Crescent isn't in the "general area" of Ecclesall at all. The centre of Ecclesall is Ecclesall Parish Chuch on Ringinglow Road. Unless Ecclesall has a radius of almost 2 miles (in which case it encompasses about a quarter of Sheffield) then Collegiate Crescent isn't Ecclesall! Hell, it isn't even in the council ward of Ecclesall either.

Dangerously close? Dangerously? What the hell is wrong with you? Are you some kind of paranoid freak who never goes out of the door in case the world may bite you? These are students you are talking about, along with their college campus. We are not discussing an open prison full of convicts.

:hihi: The "dangerously close" comment was actually tongue in cheek, although there are definitely downsides to having students more and more spread throughout the city - more noise, more vomit, more run down rented properties, etc. I personally think it's better if the student areas are more concentrated.

I think you need to wise up and put things into a more reality based perspective. Students can keep an area from stagnating, they can keep it fresh. Fair enough, you may get a fewe bad apples in the barrel, but dont suggest they are all the same, its simply not true.

See above comments.

You'll probably guess from my username where I work!*

You can find information about the new building that the University is developing on City Campus for some Psalter Lane teaching to be transferred to on our website - The Furnival Building will have specialist facilities for art and design courses and a special frontage on to the street so passers-by can view student work.

http://www.shu.ac.uk/services/facilities/estates/currentprojects/furnival.html

Incidentally as well as the Fine Art show discussed above we also have exhibitions of Product Design, Furniture Design, Packaging and Graphic Design, Design and Technology, Design Futures, Engineering, Photography, Metalwork & Jewellery, Games/Computing and Architecture students final year work at a variety of venues across the city - see http://www.shu.ac.uk/creativespark for more information - Admission is free

*Although just for the record this isn't an official Sheffield Hallam response!

No, I don't live near the Psalter Lane campus I live further up the road. I just think it's better for everyone, including the students, if the campuses are consolidated. It means less travelling between sites for the students, and for permanent residents, it keeps the students more concentrated in student "ghetto" areas. Also, the buildings at Psalter Lane are an eye sore.

I did my foundation at Psalter Lane from '85-'86 - stuck in the portacabins in the car park whilst they were building a new History Of Art ( I think) faculty.

I remember all the tutors mentioned - but nobody's referred to Percy Peacock.

Ed Meyer took a couple of us to Lincoln Cathedral to perform in some medieval pageant or something. All pageboy, doublet and hose and curled up shoes parading through the streets. Very fey-just like him. His fireplace had a quote from John Donne carved into the mantle.

Loved Psalter Lane so,so much.

They had the best arts library anywhere - and I've been to a few.

Turned me down for the sculpture degree however-so I had to go to Bradford School of Art instead.

I hope it doesn't get relocated - having a load of arty farties isolated in the leafy, steep roaded suburbs was just the ticket for introspective creativity. Plus you were surrounded by people with minds and souls alike.

God save art !

Thank God for art and artists!!

Anybody still in Sheffield who did their foundation at the same time?

Would love to see if anybody's still working in any arts field.

I am - but only just. The passion is still there though.

Wow Rose - a novel!. I can't imagine how much effort must go into a project like that.

it was on a need to do basis chrisp. ie if i didnt write it down and get it out my system i would have :loopy: - even more i mean ;) ive been working on it, on and off (real life interferes sometimes!) since feb 05 but its nearly finished now.

Fingers crossed you get a publishing deal so we can all have a read!.

thanks! :) i cant rely on crossing my fingers though. im determined to get a good publishing deal LOL!

What's the name of your book?

ive been advised to keep schtum till i secure an agent, so no more blabbing online about it from me, unfortunately, as i do love to blab! :hihi:

Its interesting to hear Nick Parkes studied in Sheff - I didn't know that. I'd like to work in some area related to children's illustration and Aardman's stuff is often quite inspiring. My kids love Wallace and Gromit.

my advice if you want to work in this area is to set aside at least an hour a day into researching how the industry works (ie childrens' book illustration if thats the area youre thinking of.)

its VITAL to spend time researching the industry. and also, just get drawing and start putting together a folio! :)

I was a student at Psalter Lane between '87 and '90 studying industrial design. It is a special campus, kind of exclusive for the arts courses based there. I will be totally gutted when the place is decommisioned, and ultimately demolished to make way for some more crap flats, no doubt. The creative courses based there now will lose some of their identity if moved away from PL.

It was because I loved the area so much that I decided to settle permanently in Sheffield after my degree. I also decided I wanted to stay in this area, and now I live around the corner in Carterknowle. Perhaps if all the friendly people I met in this area as a student back then, had the miserable attitude of t020 towards Psalter Lane students, I would have thought again and gone back home to Leeds.

:hihi: dont get mad bibble, its just forums, theres always someone. good post though, i agree about the potential loss of identity should the creative courses be moved :(

ooooh the forums resident trainspotter! :hihi:

more vomit

HA HA HA HA HA! brilliant :) (im not being sarcastic tee-oh-twenty thats made me laugh!) - i think students are a little more sophisticated than in the days of the young ones luv. ah...those were the days :)

I just think it's better for everyone, including the students,

i think the students of psalter lane art college may disagree with you, and they are the ones whose opinions count for the most.

if the campuses are consolidated. It means less travelling between sites for the students,

why is this a concern of yours, tee-oh-twenty? there isnt more travelling for art college students if they live in ecclesall or nether edge anyway.

and for permanent residents, it keeps the students more concentrated in student "ghetto" areas.

what, like the town centre?

come come mr tee-twenty-oh, youre rather over egging the pudding now, luv ;)

thanks for pointing that out, hallam06! :)

well said that man! :D

GOYA FOR PRESIDENT RA RA RA!!!!! :D :D :D

I did foundation during '85-'86 - but I'm not in Sheffield any more. That whole year seems a bit of an odd dream - a weird half way stage between leaving school, and leaving home to go to Poly. Loved being at Psalter Lane very much, but did feel the course was a bit rubbish actually - being based in those portakabins was bad news.

Still, I achieved just enough to get onto a Fine Art degree in Coventry, and that was fun...

The people who did most for me were in the photography studio - Ken Philip, Don Somebody, and another guy with a ginger beard. (Ha ha - really stuck in my memory then, didn't they??)

Trevor Faulkner ran the foundation course that year I think.

Made some good mates too, who I completely failed to keep in touch with once I left. Ho hum.

Hi, I'm a student in this year's Fine Art show. The students have collaboratively curated the exhibition this year and we've had very little assistance from the administrative staff of the university, who appear to be a lot more concerned with the promotion of the institution than the interests of its students.

The OFFICIAL exhibition website that we have created is the-end-show.org although you won't find any reference to this in any Hallam publications, following this perhaps concern should be turned to the motives behind the move to the city.

This week (Wed 31 May and Sat 3 June) we (the students) have organised two symposium days with some of the country's prominent artists, curators and cultural critics coming to speak around the themes of Institutions and Collaborative Curating ENTRY IS FREE, more information can be found on the-end-show.org (you will have to copy and paste it in to your browser as new members can't post URLs)
