ok so the Netto, who have gone out of business everywhere else as well, has been replaced by an Asda. Isn't that progress.

the restaurants are obviously terrible the few that have remained restaurants keep changing from one genre to the next for no apparent reason. It is unlikely that whatever type of food somebody wants to sell, be it Lebanese or Japanese is going to sell in Walkley. Nobody wants to know. Half the pubs have shut down. It is a nice area like I said but nobody is going to make a mint there any time soon.

Which restaurants have changed from one genre to the next?

You're right about the pubs but pub closures are certainly not limited to Walkley, and applies also the Abbeydale Road / Meersbrook area. There are still some very good pubs though.

South Road is considerably better than it was 10/15 years ago.

sorry I don't make a habit of going to totally nondescript looking Italian-type restaurants anywhere.

what was that place BEFORE it was Vito's? Do you know?

IIRC, Vito's was Pepe's. Vito worked there and bought it from the previous owner, Pepe Scime, in the early 90's

In fact, despite pub closures, there are two new pubs doing very well - newly opened the Blind Monkey seems to be full often, and the Walkley Beer Company (ok, not a pub - but you can buy beer and sit at tables to drink it) is also often full.

Absolutely - plus closed shop, hallamshire, Springvale, Blake, walkley cottage, florist, palm tree.

What exactly is the definition of a 'pub' anyway?

No. It has a premises licence which permits consumption both on and off the premises. Exactly the same as "a pub".
