Council tree felling...

Recommended Posts

I never saw anyone complaining when virtually all the mature trees on the Manor were cut down a couple of years ago.

The protests regarding the AMEY contract has been going on for more than 2 years.

Wow, what an astounding level of ignorance.

Well, except for the distinction already made that speeding and fly tipping are specifically parts of criminal law.

so is contempt

break the law suffer the consequences it makes not a bit of diference whether its speeding/breaking an injunction/fly tipping.

Speeding is a criminal offence although I struggle to see the comparison.

Fly tipping - as above.

If you think its acceptable for a local authority to seek to imprison its citizens for objecting to a dubious, at best scheme (on any number of levels - cost of the of the "secret" contract being one) good for you.

If you think it is acceptable at the commencement of proceedings for the Judge to ask in terms 'are you sure you really want to do this" and get a response "oh absolutely we really really do want to do this" then good for you.

This whole issue has been a disaster on every level for SCC, and guess who is paying for it.

The concept of local accountability seems somewhat alien here. I find the whole process unedifying, embarrassing, exasperating and bloody daft.

Do you actually understand what an injunction means?

They are just trees at the end of the day. It's not a huge problem imo.

Just plant a few more in better, more suitable areas...

The Amazon is just a vast oxygen giving rainforest...cut it down and replace it with twigs, not a problem in your stupid opinion?

You can't replace mature things with tiny things....owls don't nest in saplings for example.

Sheffield has plenty of trees, only a small amount will be felled and the replacements will soon grow.As for those in court, the law is the law and they must have known the end result.Regardless of the protest the trees will be felled, its a shame that they are to be prosecuted.

Correct DC.. they are planting new trees everywhere, 1000s of them. the south Yorkshire forest is one example.

Its been said many times before but just for You , one more time , yes the replacements will grow but not big enough to sustain nesting birds , bats , squirrels and thousands of insects .

The protest is specifically about street trees, and it's been discovered that Amey are contractually obliged to cut down and replace half Sheffield's street trees within the next 19 years.

and the replacements will soon grow.

It would take many decades for the replacements for the mature 100-year old trees in places like Western Road and Meersbrook Park Road. Certainly I won't see Sheffield streets recovered within my lifetime.

As for those in court, the law is the law and they must have known the end result.

The four protesters on trial specifically believe that they didn't break the injunction. Because of the civil nature of the injunction, SCC can bring a flimsy case to trial that the CPS would never have touched in an equivalent criminal case.

Regardless of the protest the trees will be felled,.

In 2018 so far, I think Amey have averaged cutting down less than one tree per week. The protests have been extremely successful.
