Sheffield Council is ordered to apologise to the citizens of Sheffield.

https://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/news/politics/sheffield-council-misled-public-and-acted-lack-honesty-over-tree-felling-scandal-damning-investigation-finds-3002854

"Sheffield Council misled the public, misrepresented expert advice and acted with a “lack of honesty” during the city’s tree-felling scandal, a damning investigation has found.... A 25-page report by the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman has recommended an unreserved public apology is issued by the council to the people of the city within the next three months over its handling of the controversial removal of thousands of street trees."

Over to you, Ms Dore?

Speaking for myself, a public apology from the council holds no meaning or value. It rights no wrongs, nor plants any trees.

The Council should apologise to the many residents who wanted the enormous tree in front of their house cut down, but are still stuck with it because the Council caved in to the protesters.

Funny how trees can suddenly appear that weren't there when people purchased their homes...

Although if people have lived in the same house for 20 - 30 years then quite possible that sapling when you moved in is as high as the house now.

As stated in the piece, "The council also made attempts in court - in legal action that was “positively agreed” by leader Julie Dore - to have a number of demonstrators jailed for breaching a protest injunction, with two given suspended jail sentences."

Yet absolutely no apology from Sheffield City Council leader, Julie Dore has so far been forthcoming?  Says a great deal about her in my opinion that she apparently sends out Coun. Mark Jones, to make an apology of sorts this morning on Radio Sheffield with the usual stock statements of lessons will be learned; we're listing to the people of Sheffield; we're aiming to re-engage, etc, blah, blah.

As far as I know, for a great deal of the time when this whole tree felling debacle was going on, Coun. Jones wasn't involved in any respect?

There is also a great silence from two of the other major players in this fiasco, other than Coun. Dore, who were heavily involved & very vocals in their condemnation of protesters, councillors, Bryan Lodge & Terry Fox.  Clearly these two along with Julie Dore are hoping their silence will help in distancing themselves from the damning report in the hope that the citizens of Sheffield forget the part they played in all of this?

As mentioned in the story, Julie Dore should really consider stepping down from her role as council leader.  The least she owes the people of Sheffield, (especially those whose lives were personally affected), is to step up & be questioned on her previous actions & offer her personal apology?

It's to be hoped that come the next local elections, the electorate remember this?

Residents not liking trees was not an official grounds for removal even during they heyday of SCC's chainsaw massacre.

If somebody purchased a house with a sapling outside not realising that if they were still in the house in 20 - 30 years time that the tree would  be larger by then, then I don’t have much sympathy...

Fortunately, as dave has pointed out, not liking having a tree on street by your house was never grounds for having it removed (for reasons that should be obvious..)

Does everybody in Sheffield purchase a house? What if they are council or Housing Association tenants ............. wasn't a lot of choice for them.

Or maybe they couldn't fully realise the affect that it would have on their lives, having not lived in the house.

Its the inconsistency which bothers me more.  These trees on Beaver Hill Road are never tended to, their roots are pushing the bricks out of the wall, and frequently drop huge branches onto the road.
