Winter weather thread 2017/2018

Recommended Posts

What are my chances of being able to cycle reasonably safely from S6 to the Attercliffe area for 4am in the morning?

What tyres have you got on your bike?

Main roads have been clear this afternoon, and it looks like there's no more forecast. Temperatures well below freezing though, and winds gusting to 33mph through the night, so just hope you get a tailwind :D

Does anyone else find the new BBC weather site confusing?

Have noticed a few times it seems to contradict itself!

Look at tonights headline for Sheffield it says at the top Heavy snow showers which sounds quite serious.

The icon has heavy snow showers for every single hour and the text says heavy snow showers.

However on 2 of those hours it says 0% chance of precipitation at the bottom!

Then in the tonight summary it says a few snow showers are likely at times, which to me gives the impression of a lot less snow than the headline.

Used to like the old site but the new one just looks confusing.

We were just having that conversation! OH says that it's going to be heavy snow because the BBC use that as the basic description, and I look and it's got 2% chance of being heavy snow.

If it's got a 2% chance of being heavy snow then it's got a 98% chance of NOT being heavy snow and I would have thought that this was the most appropriate message to be the headline.

And it makes it worse when you go on other sites e.g. met office and they are all different.

Glad it not just me!

No wonder people get confused,I suspect the summary at the bottom is correct but its only a guess!!

Its the same tomorrow says 2% or low chance of precipitation on every hour but forecast summary is heavy snow showers!

My kids school have committed to a decision tonight to not open tomorrow probably on the back of information from these sites that, as you say, are quite confusing and contradictory.

I have been wondering this too.

Also, I understand why the forecast on different sites may vary as they use different forecasting models. What I don't understand is why the BBC local news bulletins give totally different forecasts to the BBC website! Anyone else noticed this?
