What was or is the name of the pub and what did the locals call it.

Recommended Posts

Like you, I lived near all those pubs, but never went inside, once I was old enough to drink. We always went to town near the dance halls, City Hall, Locarno, Broadfield or the Elm Tree.

The Kermeens grew up on Shirebrook Rd, but moved around 1960 to Hollythorpe Rise to the old Farm House at the top of Meersbrook Park.

Beverleys Road

Thanks for that Audilad.

I never lived in Handsworth but my mother in law's house was just across the road from both pubs and she always referred to one of them as the 'Low Drop'; a reference to the graveyard.

I always assumed it was the Cross Keys as that was the closest to her house.

If I recall correctly the two pubs are side by side with the Cross Keys built in St Mary's graveyard and the Old Crown adjacent to it.

Wow, all these years believing the wrong thing. Thanks for putting me right. You're never too old to 'live and learn' as they say.

echo.

a lot of pubs in the town centre had their nicknames. The Black Swan was the mucky duck, the Wapentake was the Wap, the Buccaneer was Buck's

When they changed the Compleat Angler to the Mucky Duck, did everyone start calling it the Black Swan? :hihi:
