We understand that this is an emotive subject, and discussing the facts is totally fine.

Jared is local to us, and could well be a member of the forum, we dont allow name calling and insults on other threads and they arent acceptable on this one either.

Could he not be removed by the constituents using the Recall of MPs Act 2015 which makes provision for constituents to be able to recall their MP and call for a by-election.

Wouldn't he have to be guilty of an offence that warrants a jail sentence?

Not necessarily.

Section 1 sets out the circumstances in which the Speaker of the House of Commons would trigger the recall process, namely:

  • A custodial prison sentence of a year or less—longer sentences automatically disqualify MPs without need for a petition;
  • Suspension from the House of least 10 sitting days or 14 calendar days, following a report by the Committee on Standards;
  • A conviction for providing false or misleading expenses claims.

No, he does no meet the criteria for that to be allowed.

All academic as by the time any of the above kicked in we would have had an election and he will be gone

P Jared O'Mara has been arrested on suspicion of fraud, according to multiple sources.

The independent MP for Sheffield Hallam was arrested at the same time as his chief of staff Gareth Arnold, the BBC's Next Episode Podcast found.

Electronic equipment was confiscated in the South Yorkshire Police inquiry, the BBC also understands.

Mr O'Mara did not respond to requests for comment while Mr Arnold said he had "no comment".

Both have been released under investigation.

South Yorkshire Police would not confirm details of either man's arrest.

The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority said it was a "matter for the police".

Mr O'Mara said he was "taking time out for mental health treatment" in July and promised to resign at the end of summer recess after allegations of sexual misconduct towards staff.

Constituents have complained that case work has not been dealt with in the MP's absence, allegations Mr Arnold denies.

Responding to the latest news, Sinead Parkinson, a member of the Hallam Constituents Facebook group, told the BBC: "We are pleased that an investigation is under way but we are still a constituency unrepresented and action needs to be taken to correct that."

During its investigation, the BBC uncovered staff running the MP's office without the proper security clearance required by Parliamentary authorities.

After the investigation was published, the constituency office was closed and staff formally given four weeks' notice.

The Treasury confirmed Mr O'Mara had, in recent weeks, given formal notice of his intent to resign in September.

When the BBC has visited the constituency offices, on a number of occasions, they were found to be empty.

The Speaker should put forward a motion to suspend him from Parliament after the summer break, he needs 10 days suspension before a recall petition can be made.

Obviously he's "promised" to resign, but I don't think anyone will trust a word he says.

I encountered him when he first became an MP, he was very keen to help on social care issues, sent a very nice email offering full support, its a tragedy all round.

The young BBC reporter who broke the news, was speaking on Look North last night.

For all O'Mara's concerns for being a champion for various health issues, the reporter highlighted one particular constituent of O'Mara's.

Due to the fact that O'Mara has basically been an absent MP for the past year or so, not running surgerys, not being contactable in any way, (but still picking up the salary), the particular constituent, a mother of a child who has Asperger's Syndrome, requires O'Mara's signature as her MP to be able to get her child into a special needs educational establishment.  Her situation has dragged on for many months because O'Mara is not fulfilling his duties as her MP.  Disgraceful.

As for him resigning when Parliament re-opens after the summer recess, I'll bet a pound to a penny that O'Mara will have one last throw of the dice by announcing his resignation in tbe Commons & having one last pop at them all, blaming the HoC set-up  for adding to his problems?

No doubt he'll play the mental health issues card?

Or given the related allegations made in the papers last week, and that his first year's published expenses seem reasonable,  he'll play the the victim of a friend he thought he could trust card

Why does a child with Asperger’s need an MP’s signature for anything ?

O’Mara is not medically qualified, so he can’t make such a request as an ‘expert’ .
