How does one find oneself in a position to be elected?

Over promoted. I`ve seen it all my life. =He is simply not intelligent enough for such a role.

Then why don't you do it yourself and run for the position of Lord Mayor, since you're so intelligent.

Because, clearly, he just isn't ?

I have just spoken the truth. He is not intelligent enough. Most people can see that straight away. I feel Sheffield deserves better. Ok, show me an example of his intelligence?

Right, you lot above. I did`t run for public office so i don`t understand your comments, oh yes i do, they are lazy, pure lazy.

When did i say i was so intelligent, again come back with something to prove me wrong, go on prove me wrong.....................

If the people of Sheffield demanded better we wouldn`t have been left behind. Look at the last 30 years. Three cities, all similar size and population, ahh what happened to you, what ever happen to us. Likely Lads tune. You all know the story.

Ok, us should be me.

Billions have been invested in Leeds and Manchester, Sheffield and its people accepted the crumbs and they were crumbs.

On the one hand, I utterly condemn Cameron for raising the pension age beyond its original 65.

And I suspect when I eventually do retire in a couple of decades, then the pension age will have reached at least 70.

I utterly, utterly condemn Cameron for this.

But, on the other hand, if delaying the pension age for several more years means I never live to see retirement, whereupon my brain atrophies due to lack of stimulation which leaves me far too much time on my hands but with the lack of wit to write nonsensical posts like yours then, well, maybe that's the silver cloud in this cloud.

YOU made the claim O'Mara is "not intelligent enough for such a role" so YOU back it up with evidence, not me.

And the boy has finally made his maiden speech, but none of you will know this because the site has tacked my latest reply onto the end of yesterday's message. Thanks a lot, people

From the Sheffield Star website:

Sheffield Hallam MP Jared O'Mara finally gives his maiden speech in Parliament

Controversial Sheffield MP Jared O'Mara has finally made his maiden speech in Parliament 13 months after being elected.

The MP for Sheffield Hallam, who resigned from the Labour party earlier this month, delivered his speech during a general debate in which MPs can raise any matter they want ahead of the summer recess.

Mr O'Mara was suspended as a Labour MP over sexist and homophobic comments before quitting the party, claiming he had been unfairly treated.

Speaking in the House of Commons, he said: "Mr Speaker, thank you - in fact, everybody thank you, you've all been terribly patient.

"I'm delighted today to finally be able to make my maiden speech as the MP for the constituency where I grew up, Sheffield Hallam.

"I was elected a year ago as Hallam's first Labour MP but due to mistakes I made when I was young, and for which I am truly sorry and hurt a lot of people, I've been unable to speak in the House with confidence until now and I currently speak in the capacity of an independent.

"In addition to this, I am also Parliament's very first autistic MP as well as having cerebral palsy and other disabilities. This is something which fills me with immense pride and it is an honour for me to have the chance to represent our country's disabled people in addition to serving my constituents.

Mr O'Mara praised his Liberal Democrat predecessor Sir Nick Clegg for his 'admirable and steadfast belief in the value of our membership in the European Union' and commitment to multiculturalism, noting he shared both of these.

He added: "I may, of course, be biased but Sheffield Hallam is quite possibly one of the most beautiful and greenest constituencies in the country."

The Independent MP also praised the sports stars which have emerged from his constituency, including 'the best right-back in football' Kyle Walker.

He offered the warm tribute to the England star 'even though I am an Owl and he is a Blade' - in recognition of his support for Sheffield Wednesday and Walker's for Sheffield United.

He said Sheffield Hallam 'gets unfairly typecast as one of the least diverse and most wealthy' constitutencies in the north but said he'd had the 'privilege of meeting people from all walks of life' since being elected.

Mr O'Mara, 36, said: "Hallam is the epitome of multiculturalism as is the city of Sheffield as a whole and I am very proud to call it home."

He also spoke of what can be learned from the teachings of Jesus, although said he considers himself "a man of science".

Mr O'Mara said: "He was a man who forgave those who truly repented and he shares my belief that our utmost human priority should be helping those who are most disadvantaged and vulnerable amongst us."

The Sheffield Hallam MP concluded his remarks by asking his constituents, all political parties and everyone in the country to join him in "prioritising these principles".

He added: "I promise that I will do my utmost to help all those in need of help within my constituency and to champion the cause of equality.

"When I return to Parliament in September I shall do so with renewed vigour and an unwavering commitment to social justice and look forward to being the best MP that I can possibly be."

House of Commons speaker John Bercow congratulated Mr O'Mara for his 'commendably succinct' and wished him well.

his speech made yesterday's news. He's now got a chance to show the Hallam electorate that they got it right, or not. They'll make up their minds at the next election.

Just for clarity Ms Macbeth and 1978 - I don't think all people of a certain age are selfish and took out of the system - I was making a point about a sweeping generalisation made about young people by an earlier poster.

My dad and all my uncles and aunts worked from being 15 and didn't benefit from free university tuition and paid into the system.

That being said my old man asked me which way to vote in EU referendum as it wouldn't affect him as much as me and his grandchildren - which I thought was very enlightened for a 75 year old off the cross :hihi:

I just don't like it when people dismiss all young people's opinions or trot out the line that they 'waste votes' as they don't have the experience to understand politics.

Anyway, no offence intended to the majority of those from older generations!

Credit where it's due. He made his first contribution on the last day before the summer recess and not a bad speech at all. Let's all hope it's the first contribution in a fight back that as an MP will be for the benefit of his constituents, the nation, and especially himself.

The Commons record of the full speech in context in the Summer Adjournment Debate is here; https://hansard.parliament.uk/Commons/2018-07-24/debates/9DF2F3F9-C84E-4556-859A-AE233091A9AD/SummerAdjournment?highlight=jared#contribution-B79FF17A-0614-4B12-A40A-4ACB26C2F2B4

Explanation accepted, but on the Brexit debate I suspect even history won't be able to say what we should have done because 'the facts' wil be disputed into eternity!

Agreed. Returning to O'Mara, decent speech he made yesterday, time will tell over it's sincerity, but perosanlly think it's time to move on, give him a chance and provide 'feedback' at next election.
