Air Pollution in Sheffield - Most polluted streets

Recommended Posts

Is there any data regarding pollution levels in the city?

There's one or two areas where I always get a tight chest and cough when I'm there. Thought I was imagining it to begin with but nope, the air quality seems very poor and I physically react to it.

St Mary's Gate area is a bad one for me.

there are several of those pollution monitoring contraptions scattered throughout the city, and the data they capture is a good a place to start:

https://uk-air.defra.gov.uk

And search for Sheffield in the Air Quality search box in the top right.

Also the city council's official Air Quality page has useful info, look at diffusion tube results (2003-2016) on the bottom right.

So the most polluted areas are the ones where the council have installed excessive traffic lights, which keeps vehicles stalled/queuing, instead of passing through. That's a surprise

Amongst the highest level of pollution in the whole country is around Tinsley, Meadowhall and the lower slopes of Wincobank. Measurement made extensively in the late 80's (post steelworks) showed some of the highest levels of airborne lead the source was of course the roads and its geographical situation. The geographical study established that temperature inversion was the significantly biggest factor as it trapped any pollutants. Although lead is no longer a significant problem other pollutants will be similarly trapped.

Why is traffic always blamed for pollution? In lots of places in and around Sheffield it smells like bonfire night day in day out. This is because of more and more people using wood burners. These monstrosities give off toxic particles which at best cause sore throats and runny eyes,at worst chest infections( hence your tight chest )and possibly cancer.Anybody living near somebody using a wood burner will have noticed their windows and surrounds have black particles on them, these are also entering peoples chest and lungs.Sheffield is supposed to be a clean air, smoke free city,it is high time wood burners were banned.

The open air tools are pretty good. https://uk-air.defra.gov.uk/data/openair?build=timeplot

Select Sheffield Tinsley, select all variables, set the time period to MAX (1990->2017) and do the chart, it shows a downward trend since 1990. If we are now at 2 x the legal levels, what have we been suffering in the past?

Indeed. I think the usual figures are something like:

40% home boilers

40% power stations

11% vehicles

9% industrial/other

Wood burners are banned in Sheffield for everything but treated fuel.

How many power stations are their in Sheffield?

This data has no relation to the situation in Sheffield nor does it attempt to describe how harmful the contributions are.

Another study:

Traffic 25%

Combustion and agriculture 22%

Domestic fuel burning 20%

Natural dust and salt 18%

Industrial activities 5%

are the main sources of particulate matter contributing to cities' air pollution.

Source: 2015 European Commission, Joint Research Centre (JRC) based on 51 cities and recording the harmful fine particles PM2.5 and PM10 sas indicators of air quality.

Figures for traffic woud be higher in Sheffield.

There are different causes in different places, the dirty diesel trains and stop-start traffic around the station are going to be the biggest cause of air pollution there. There must be a good case for diverting traffic away from in front of the station this is the gateway to our city for many visitors and it's hardly a great first impression to be met by 4 lanes of traffic and poor quality air.
