Garlic   10 #95 Posted June 26, 2006 I've been put off contributing to this thread due to the slanging match between just a few people, but I feel i must try and put a different view which i hope will be useful to prospective Newfield parents. As i did say earlier, with 3 children who have been at Newfield they are all doing very well academically and have lots of opportunities be invoved on short projects, trips etc .For example last week had a science day looking at genetic engineering and debated the ethics of various ideas they came up with in groups. Also extracted their own DNA and given a phial on a neck cord to bring it home in! A sight more interesting than anything I ever did at school!!  Also, and probably more importantly, i just don't recognise the description of most of the students as thugs or worse. My children all have loads of friends, from all backgrounds and areas including the much mentioned Gleadless Valley, and without exception they are all really nice polite teenagers.(Really!)I'm absolutely sure there's some out of control kids at Newfield, and I'm sure that's true of any comprehensive, but having lived near the shcool i've never found the crowds of kids coming out the gate after school the slightest bit intimidating, which I bet you can't say about all schools. Also none of my kids have been bullied in their time there, whereas if the school was as rough as has been suggested as hard working (well most of the time!) students they would have presumably have been prime targets, and all the other kids they are friends with who are well behaved. So i presume the troublemakers are a minority and that the school keeps them under control  I'm definately not saying Newfield is perfect, their Oftsted report says things need to improve and that they have to show improvements in one year, but no they are not in special measures as one person said earlier.  I think deciding what school to send your child to is so hard, infact we weren't given a choice as most of the alternative schools were full, but I don't regret that my children went there, and am really pleased how much they feel part of their local community by going to their local school, which to me is one of the important things about comprehensive education.  Anyway to all of you trying to decide on shcools ,good luck with it, all you can really do is look at the various options and find out as much as you can, then hope for the best!
