Which is fine, but you do realise that under our fixed-term parliament act the Tories are in government until May 2022.

If TM does step down it will only trigger a leadership contest within the Tory party with gives BoJo his opportunity to strike.

Is that what you want?

The fixed term act means jack. The last parliament lasted < 2 years

If they use it to cling on then the country will ruthlessly punish them in 2022

that's only because she called an election, although some on the extreme left are under the delusion they can overthrow the government it isn't going to happen.

When she called the election she had an enormous lead in the polls and thought she couldn't lose. Just shows you never to count your chickens, or take the electorate for granted.

..

Fixed term parliament act is a bit of a con really. They introduced it for a good reason to prevent premature campaigning in a more stable government, but it only relates to the maximum term and there are several other ways to finish it early.

The Tories are now in a terrible state and full of factions. If they try to anoint another PM without a proper General Election some of the DUP or Tory MPs could force the issue by resigning the whip and sitting opposite. Which would make them a minority government and that would make business grind to a standstill.

Even the Queen is not forced to accept another Conservative Prime Minister as the palace was lied to about the DUP deal being finalised when it was nowhere near.

May was chosen as the "last resort" because all the other candidates were unacceptable. She's the last chance until they get some new blood in and find a new Normal person who could appeal to the country at large and that means people less than 40 years old.

Don't forget older candidates bring experience, gravitas and an understanding of history (which repeats itself apparently.) They also might appeal more to older people who traditionally are the one's who vote, although Jeremy Corbyn seems to be turning that around. Otherwise I agree with your post.

Did you have anyone under 40 in mind?

Well, she wasn't struck by a falling piano when she stepped out of the conference hall, but that is as good as the day got for May.

Boris Johnson won't be PM. Too much jealousy against him, too many enemies in the Tory party.

Ruth Davidson might be a good each way bet.

Yeah, my money would be on her too. She eloquent, doesn't seem prone to gaffes and appears completely un-Tory in many ways. A lot of her views don't align with what most people would say were Tory stereotypes. She's a bit like John Major in some ways in that Labour and LD supporters could find themselves in agreement with her on many topics. Perhaps a good unifying figure for the whole UK?

Yes, I think she could be. She's got some fire in her belly too.

I like Ruth Davidson, but isn't she an MEP. To be Prime Minister I'm sure you have to be a MP? If that's the case she'll just have to put herself forward if there is a by-election in the future.

I still think May will stay as PM until the next election.

Doubt it. Not when Scotland is full of Remainers, and half of Scotland are wanting to break away from rest of UK entirely. I'd say she would actually be more divisive.
