The foil/paper barrier is an aid to give a longer shelf life but mainly it is to protect the product in transit/on the shelf basically because the lid isn't tamper proof.

 

That's why you find it on jars and bottles of sauce too.

 

None of the lids are 100% airtight but the barrier doesn't reseal anyway.

Surely it's the tamper seal, so if you get your fresh marg home and the foil isn't attached, you take it back and don't use it in case someone injected ebola virus into it (or a booger).

Well i can assure you she has no idea what she's talking about.

For the exact reason Cyclone mentioned - i sell such products for a living and can say hand on heart i know more about it than the lady in consumer care does.

 

But if you prefer to believe her, then that's all fine.
