Noise complaint about my 125cc scooter.

Recommended Posts

Dont worry, you have nothing to be worried about, unless you are riding it around on your front lawn being a pratt, you have nothing to be bothered about, if it has a valid mot then there is nothing they can do. just continue to act considerately as you are doing,

I was pulled on the motorway by the police saying my motorbike was excessively smoking, but that was how it was manufactured and it had a valid MOT, there was nothing they could do and left me alone

the scooter does have a after market exhaust (sorry no name) but its not over the normal you see them on lots and lots of scooters

Maybe there's a hole in your exhaust.

Or maybe the exhaust is fine and its just a high revver (=noisy) and calms down when its off choke (revs drop)- nothing you can do about that.

Soemtimes its worth asking a garage how to make your bike a quieter starter-cheaply.

Id put a standard one back on sharpish just on the off chance this does develop.

Yes they do have every upstairs windows open all night.

You could walk past in workboots and wake the idiots up.

Just ignore them.

What is the purpose of this different exhaust; is it to look shiny or sound louder?

That would be a great idea in general on some smaller bikes and mopeds - however i do feel that desire is for more noise not less.

Perhaps that is the issue - we have several near me and they can be annoying and humorous at the same time.

(Especially when they are overtaken by a disability scooter on the hills.)

yes the scooter is a high rev to start then i will settle after 30 sec or so. ive been told thats DNA for you but in my opinion compared to a vespa my bike is quite. i will book it in at my local scooter garage and get them to inspect. ill start pushing it to the road side and have to start it up no over place bang beside their house instead two doors down and only passing end of there garden.

I notice that the comment about the after market exhaust only comes out at this point. If the alternative exhaust increases the noise made by your bike even by a few decibels then I'm afraid you are likely to be left with no leg to stand on if this complaint is taken further.

Many after market exhausts change the tone of the engine sufficiently that your neighbour would be able to pick out your bike from others no matter what time of day you left or returned, which provides an easy focus for them when you really could live without it being there.

As it stands, they can point to a 'modified' bike and that implies that whatever excess noise they allege you are making is made by your choice, rather than the basic noise of your bike.

It also gives you a good bargaining chip though. If you change back to the standard for your bike then if they continue to complain about it you can tell them that you changed the exhaust to make it quieter yet they still continue to complain about it.

You have a right to go out to work on your bike, as long as you're not sitting outside revving for 5 minutes before you leave or using a horn or whatever, and nobody can challenge you on it if you're being sensible.

(ex-biker here, not trying to get at you)

Not true, it could be a louder exhaust and still road legal. i think it should have a stamp on it declaring its either road legal, or not road legal,

Most after market exhausts would look silly with a road legal stamp on them. Nobody would buy them. Loud exhausts save life's.
