Sizeable blocks of timber?

Anyone know where I could buy solid timber, preferably hardwood but variety of tree is not so important - can be oak, beech, what-have-you (I'm no expert), that is (my perfect size) 170mm by 170mm (so square) by about 800mm long? I'd prefer it to be straight edged and planed, but I can give that a shot myself... I want to make some solid plinths for things... but finding timber of this size has proven to be troublesome (well, so far)... it's for internal use, so I'll stain and varnish but it doesn't need any special outdoor treatment done to it.

 

Maybe I need several smaller pieces of what they call PSE and then I would glue them together using clamps?

I guess a new oak railway sleeper wouldn't be big enough and would require squaring off?

 

Have you thought about a farmers gate post? Wm Eyres at Brough on the way to Bradwell have some - probably not oak or beech though. I've used them before.

 

Other alternatives would be to look at the auctions/antique shops/salvage yards to see if you could recycle from a piece of furniture.

 

What are the plinths for? Do they need to solid, or could you build a frame and face it?

Always amuses me, when you watch certain US-based Youtube videos of "how to make..." or "DIY this-and-that", how they've invariably got an "offcut of maple/oak/cedar" and the like.....and they show something akin to a railway sleeper!

Thanks all for the input... I've also got a PM from a forumer that I'll follow-up on.

 

The plinth are just to stand some stuff on - not heavyweight or anything like that, I just like really solid stuff and I didn't want to frame and face it.

 

I've resized my ambition, slightly, to 170mm x 170mm by 700mm but it's still chunky!

Their finished oak beams look like what my mind was envisaging... they go up to 8" by 8" although the price may make my eyes smart, but I could go over and tempt myself - that would really be the job done, I guess, so it'd be a case of me throwing money at the problem.

Inside the antiques centre at Wentworth, the lower part where the cafe is, there is section selling all sorts of items made from recycled timbers. He seems to do anything from a small bread board up to dining tables, he also sells ready to use reclaimed beams of varying sizes and reasonably priced. Well worth a visit, it is on Cortworth Lane heading out of Wentworth towards Upper/Nether Haugh.I can`t for the life of me remember his or his company name but he is based in Barnsley.
