What's the weather like in Sheffield? Could it be sheet lightning? That tends to light up the entire sky.

its quite heavy, the barometer suggests heavy rain but its been quite muggy all day, it seems fairly dark outside to me.

Do you know that for a fact? It doesn't necessarily need to be thundery and raining where you are for you to see sheet lightning. It could be an indication that a storm is nearby, or that one is on its way towards you.
