Another WMC closes.

Recommended Posts

Just read elsewhere that Queens Road social Club has closed, not be many left soon, many reckon the Manor on City Road will be next.

I'm not so convinced. Isn't is more the case that tastes and trends have changed well away from traditional WMCs.

After all, take a look down town on a Fri/Sat night and streets are buzzing with people drinking and socialising in various bars and venues - many of which have prices well above your average WMC.

Away from the yuppie crowd there is a boom in real ale pubs, microbreweries and reborn "traditional" locals attracting a newer and younger crowd.

Sad as it is to see anywhere close, Im not so sure its all a case of "people cant afford" and "greedy breweries".

Don't you also have to be a member of union or something to drink in a WMC? Seems like they're just one of those things that's from a different time, and are dying out

You do not need to be a member of a union just a member of the club.

The closing of working mens clubs is just another nail in the demise of traditional Sheffield and proper Sheffielders.

What a pity, great memories of Sunday dinner times at Queens Road in the late 60s with my dad and uncle and pints of Mansfield. The concert room was always packed and always at least two turns on.

Killed by greedy brewers, the smoking ban and a generation that would sooner stay at home playing with their phones.

rather than crying in your latte's about this why not go out and go to one.

many during the week are quiet and the usual customers generally don't bite much.

What are you talking about "proper Sheffielders"

Its called progress. It happens. Times move on and tastes change. You talk as if that means that people who dont visit a WMC are some sort of second class citizen.

Im a proper Sheffielder. I was born and bred here and with exception of a few years in London for work, have lived here for the a majority of my life. I live in the less posh side of the city, work in Sheffield and have a Sheffield accent.

Could count on one hand the times in my entire life I have ever stepped into a WMC and I certainly will not be alone. Does that exclude me from being a Proper Sheffielder and outside of this seemingly fantasy world of what others narrow as "traditional" Sheffield.

Sometimes all this latching on to the past as if its a hallmark of society is sillly.

You could also be a guest 'signed in at the door' of that member. As for 'the demise of proper Sheffielder's', (perish the thought), not if arv owt to do wi it !
