Hi,

I Need a suggestion for a romantic restaurant for wedding anniversary in Sheffield or the Peak district.

Push the boat out at Marco@Milano on Archer Road, I am longing to try Miller &Carter at Parkhead. It is a chain but we have been to the Manchester branch a few times and found it excellent.

Well...you've said "romantic" so if my idea of romantic is the same as yours I'd be thinking of some quality place where you can dine in nice, quiet, surroundings that permit a conversation between you and your partner without the folks on the next table hearing every word. I'd be thinking soft lighting, fine wine, good food, good service. I may even be thinking - overnight accommodation too.

An anniversary is a special occasion so it deserves a special place and for me that rules out any chain restaurant (even though the Miller & Carter place is quite good to be fair - but I wouldn't deem it special enough for a romantic anniversary meal).

Marco@Milano's isn't a bad shout actually. I think it's a very good restaurant, probably the best restaurant in the immediate vicinity of Sheffield. Put it this way, if I was entertaining international clients, which I do occasionally (but rarely in Sheffield), it's about the only place near to the city centre that I'd feel happy to take them to. However, I think you could do even better in the "romantic" and "special" stakes...

I'd suggest a few places, not so far from Sheffield, within 30 minutes drive.

The first is Hassop Hall Hotel, at Hassop, near Bakewell.

This is a beautiful country house hotel in a beautiful rural setting. As you enter you will be greeted by soft piano music then escorted to an oak panelled dining room and presented with drinks and menus. The menu is really extensive and although it's not cheap, it's not overly expensive and is good value for money. The food, I'd describe, as being "good" - not "haute cuisine" as such, but more simple, British, homely, type food. The dining rooms are delightful with high ceilings, Victorian decor and plenty of space between tables. The wine list is...surprisingly cheap actually (in fact, I think it is too cheap and they could be a lot more adventurous with the wines - but again it's good value for money). It would make a perfect setting for a romantic meal and you could even stay overnight if you wish. I go there fairly regularly although have never stayed overnight.

The next one is The Old Vicarage at Ridgeway.

Now, I confess I haven't been to this restaurant for several years. It used to be very good - like, the best within 30 mile radius of Sheffield. It was in the Good Food Guide and had a Michelin Star, until recently. In terms of being a special, romantic setting, it ticks all the boxes. I suppose I felt that on the last occasion I was there, it was just a little too snobbish. And that's why I haven't been back. I have heard that they lost their Michelin Star a while ago and their business has been badly affected as a result. It's still turning out the same high quality food in pleasant surroundings by all accounts.

Then there are these two sister establishments:

The Cavendish Hotel, Baslow and The George Hotel, Hathersage.

Personally I don't think either of these is quite as grand or romantic an experience as Hassop Hall, but they are worth a look. As is this one...

Losehill House Hotel

Nice country house hotel, near Edale. I've dined there once and the food is good - a bit more imaginative than Hassop Hall - and has a better wine list - but Hassop beats it for atmosphere I'd say.

And then there's this one, Fischer's of Baslow..

Which I would say is the best food of any of the ones mentioned here. The tasting menu is exceptional. It's not cheap but it really is very good food and it's a nice romantic dining atmosphere.

I have a big birthday coming up this year and it's the kind of thing that we really enjoy as a couple, going to somewhere special like these places and having a nice meal, maybe staying over. In fact on this occasion I'm planning to go a bit further afield and visit one of my favourite places to eat and stay....this place...

The George at Stamford

Maybe one for you and your partner for another occasion? It's just under 2 hours drive from Sheffield but worth a visit for the charming town of Stamford and the food, drink and accommodation at this place is first class.

Enjoy!

Derby Tup, what a magnificent choice of venues. The George at Stamford has been on my "bucket list" for years.

We love he Cavendish at Baslow a luxurious restaurant in a spectacular setting, but we have never seen it busy.

I'd highly recommend the Cavandish, stayed many times for the type of occasion you mention, lovely place, great setting, very good service and good food.

Losehill lost a few points for me due to lax service.

If you want to go further afield try the excellent Devonshire Arms at Bolton Abbey.
