Come back Thursday for a Drs appointment

Recommended Posts

My pal has just tried to book an appointment at our S35 doctors surgery , he has been told to come back on Thursday and apply again as the appointments are over three weeks away .

So one wonders what our North Sheffield M.P. is doing about this situation now that the elections are over and she is back in Parliament , maybe she could ask if the grand old Duke of Edinburgh had to come back on Thursday to see if he could get seen to in three weeks or is it just us lot in cladded houses who have to suffer.

What a load of garbage.

Maybe rather than singling out the royal family, instead you should focus your anger and concerns towards those who voted the Tory government into power back in 2010? After all it is this government who have sanctioned the wholesale cuts year upon year and sent our NHS close to meltdown.

The pressures on GP surgeries aren't a recent thing but something which has been forecast for quite some time. With an ever growing population and advances in medicine meaning that the average life expectancy has increased. You also have to consider modern social lifestyles as well as these contribute to many an illness or condition.

How do the Tories deal with this? By cutting guaranteed budgets for GP surgeries and making wholesale cuts.

Fortunately we do still have an option in Sheffield. Those who can not get an appointment in their own GP surgeries can still attend the walk in service down at Rockingham House and whilst this may not be "convenient" for all, those who really need to see a doctor will go out of their way to ensure that this happens. Those who are too ill to attend the walk in centre have the option to call 111 and speak to a medical professional who will then escalate accordingly and arrange the appropriate treatment.

So instant treatment for the privileged in OUR Country inc most M.P.s is O.K while we mere mortals are subject to third class service is the way you think eh!!.

Good un:loopy:

My surgery only opens 5 1/2 days a week and closes on Wednesday @ 12:15. We have 3 GP's in rotation that only do around 2 1/2 days a week each. Maybe if doctors surgeries opened their doors for longer and actually did something like a full week or even open later in the evenings then the pressure would be off. Granted they have some out of hours work but I doubt that would add up to another 2 1/2 days.

Another thing that could possible help is if they got a bit more modern and efficient so when booking an appointment they could tell you if you could get an earlier appointment at a different surgery.

Whilst they only spend 2 and a half days in your particular practice, you will usually find that doctors do work in other fields for the other days also. For instance many doctors specialised in a particular hospital field as well as being a GP, therefore may work in one of the local hospitals within a specialist field on the other days. It also amuses me that some people think that GP's simply clock on for their first patient and then clock off after their last patient as this only accounts for a percentage of the days duties, many will then be faced with countless administrative / follow on duties or alternatively will then go on to complete home visits. Regardless the working day is much greater than clinic times.

In addition to this so doctors may also rotate between surgeries should they work in partnership with other practises or even may even work locum to provide cover for other practises due to a shortfall within the profession.

In order to receive funding surgeries have to commit to being open and available, as well as providing a certain number of appointments per week. Whilst in an ideal world the surgeries would love to be able to open for more hours and if possible 7 days a week, it just simply isn't feasible as they don't not physically have the resources available to do so.

The half day closure of surgeries isn't time off either. Whilst the doors may be closed to the general public, loads of work is still going on behind the scenes, whether it be administrative duties, training, clinics in surgery or elsewhere.

At the moment GP surgeries are being somewhat scapegoated for the overall pressures on the NHS however the levels of funding combined with a shortage of doctors (in my opinion) make it near impossible for most surgeries to offer more than they currently are doing.

In Sheffield we are still lucky enough to have access to a walk in GP surgery which is open 14 hours a day, 7 days a week. In addition to this we also have a minor injuries unit which is available 12 hours a day, 7 days a week.

With the above in mind whilst patients may not be able to obtain an appointment with their own GP immediately, there is no question that those who require treatment from a GP still have ample access. Whether it be a home visit or an alternative out of hours service.

These services are readily available and are playing a huge part in easing the current pressures for local GP surgeries and hospitals.

To provide anything more would require a huge commitment towards our NHS by our government.

Thursday is their half day. If you ring at 8.30 am, you will probably get a same day appointment, as some appointments are kept back for that purpose.

I dont agree I have worked in many GP surgeries and can tell you that thursday afternoons there is no one around and no explanation as to where they are ! In this day and age i think its disgraceful that thursday half day closing is allowed Most surgeries have enough GPs to offer a service from 8 am to 8 pm monday to saturday instead of paying into the GP collabs out of hours that pay doctors over £100 pounds per hour sometimes much much more Walk in centres do not do long term conditions reviews, bloods or anything that is remotely routine for which hard working people cannot get to their local practice for weeks and weeks because of their rigid traditional practices .

That is also the situation in my surgery and I suspect in many others too. The receptionists attitude is something to be desired as well.

Ecclesfield and Margetson booking is a pain. I booked an appointment recently for my son - that is over 3 weeks away and at Ecclesfield which is more difficult for me to get to. I have a 5 and 2 year old and don't drive.

Plus then there is the waiting time. Last appointment was nearly an hour after it should be. It is very difficult waiting with young children for that length of time.

When I lived at Wincobank it was totally different. Could sometimes get a routine appointment within a few days. Yes the sometimes ran late but not as often or as long.

Guessing I was lucky at Wincobank.

Also not keen on a couple of the older doctors at Ecclesfield as I remember them from when I lived at Grenoside. It seems like unless your dead then there is nothing wrong with you. On one occasion I was lucky I didn't die. I ended up in hospital being pumped full of antibiotics, fluids and beta blockers. I was told that my heart was beating so fast due to fighting the kidney infection that I was at risk of having a heart attack - I was 20 at the time. I had seen a GP a couple of weeks earlier and she didn't seem that concerned with my symptoms.
