What draws you to reply to a thread ?

Recommended Posts

I've often wondered what draws posters to a particular thread as some have lots of replies and others none at all.

Hmmm...

... From my observations, it appears that some posters are attracted to threads containing posts from other posters, and not necessarily to the thread title itself.

This becomes obvious when you read replies from people who have no clue what they're talking about, but still feel compelled to contribute anyway.

With the help of Mr Google, or armed only with the specialist knowledge they overheared last night in the pub, they merrily rant away to their hearts content happily fooling both themselves and the more gullible amongst us that they know what they're talking about, while at the same time boosting their all important post count to further enhance their forum worthiness.

I sometimes wish I could be more like them and dream of one day becoming one of the forum elite with a post count of over 10,000...

... trouble is, I have a life and I can't think of enough rubbish to post anyway!

Shouldnt that have been 5,211 posts? Or possibly not, 3585 will have counted your present one.

Thanks for proving my point guys!

Anyone like to guess how many posts this thread gets before we're sent to Room 101? :D

With me it's purely down to the topic and whether it interests me, or it is something that has touched my life in one way or another.

I know a lot about very few subjects and try not to post any more than my opinion or experiences. I believe everyone is allowed an opinion regardless of knowledge of a subject.

My biggest failing is not being able to easily ignore Trolls, so when I fail I console myself by knowing that they are lonely people, possibly isolated, and it is just an outlet for them.

We having cake?

Yeah, the mods all get together and make a cake for new Elite members (10,000 posts) … didn't you know? I hear Pat's set up a very successful cake shop on the strength of it.

Anyway, can't use up all my other 20 odd posts on this thread, gotta make 'em last.

For me it's firstly whether or not it's about a topic I have any interest in, or something with an intriguing heading.

Then it depends on whether the thread has been hijacked by those posters who like to make it personal or like to score points for the sake of it, or like to introduce their own agenda irrespective of what the post is about

Then it depends on what's already been said - I do occasionally say "what he/ she said" but I try to avoid it

No idea what my post count is - I don't post as often as I used to, but I doubt the mods will ever have to pop along to Pat's cake emporium for my benefit
