The Consequences of Brexit [part 4]

Michael Gove has told the Danish fishing industry that boats from EU countries will still be able to operate in UK waters after Brexit, as the UK does not have enough capacity to catch and process all its fish alone.

The comments from Gove, recounted by Danish fishing leaders after they met the environment secretary, prompted complaints from the Lib Dems and SNP that the government’s stance on the issue was confused.

In July, Gove said Britain was “taking back control” of its fisheries by departing from the EU common fisheries policy, which lets member states fish between 12 and 200 nautical miles off the UK’s coastline.

He also announced the UK’s withdrawal from the London fisheries convention, signed before the UK joined the EU, which lets vessels from the UK, France, Belgium, Germany, Ireland and the Netherlands fish within between six and 12 nautical miles of each other’s coasts.

But the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) said the plan had always been to allow other nations some access to UK territorial waters after Brexit, and that the extent of this could now be decided by the UK.

Gove, who was made environment secretary after June’s election, met representatives from Danish fish processing companies and the country’s fishing industry in Jutland on Monday, the Jyllands-Posten newspaper reported.

At the meeting the Danes were told by Gove that the UK “does not have the capacity to catch and process all the fish in British waters” and thus boats from EU nations would be allowed continued access post-Brexit.

It's almost as though they have no idea what they're doing, and are making stuff up as they go along without bothering to agree it between themselves in order to present a united front.

Obviously, that can't be what's actually happening, because these are the people that are going to lead us onward and upward, towards the sunlit pastures of milk and honey, where we will once again experience Camelot.

The EU countries won't have failed to notice the changing sentiment in the UK. It'll be factored into how they approach this.

They've got no desire to punish the people of the UK. Certain politicians and parties (look out Labour and Tories) on the other hand.....

Since they weren't able to dispute anything he said, time to attack the messenger.

Pretty telling....

Nothing to believe just one mans unproved opinion from his crystal ball, backed up by the EU.

It's better than any alternative that leave propose. That is crystal clear. All the evidence is stacked against you.

Said without any hint of irony when Farage looks set to benefit from a £70,000 a year EU pension for the rest of his life.

Get a grip. You look stupid.

Problem with that view is that that one man actually knows what he's talking about and you don't.

From his purely personal economic point of view it couldn't get better.

His particular knowledge base is going to be in serious demand both during and after Brexit.

We are going to continue trading with the EU and will need people to keep us informed as to EU requirements.

As we will no longer be having an input to those requirements but will have to conform to them in order to trade within the market people such as Professor Dougan are going to be in demand.

As for your " backed up by the EU " comment take a look at this link.

Childish jibes, it's all you lot have got isn't it?

Unable to debate on reason and facts act like 3 year olds.

Anyway your gurning hero reckons we may well have another opportunity to decide.

Once it becomes crystal clear what the ramifications of Brexit are who could object to asking the country if that is in fact what they want?

We voted last time with no real concept of the consequences, so to vote again when we do know what's going to happen is commonsense isn't it?

Also democracy in action, and you know how you Brexiteers love democracy so much.

It's questionable whether the result should continue to be respected.

The country is clearly making a huge mistake.
