The Joker   10 #133 Posted October 31, 2018 However, Leeds isn't far away and we've a thread on the go at the minute discussing commuting options so there will be some jobs for sheffield people with the ambition do drive a few miles up the motorway or get on a train.  yeah, all half-dozen of them
 Share this content via...
tinfoilhat   11 #134 Posted October 31, 2018 So that's part of the price of giving away our HS2 station and airport then  Be interesting to see where their chosen site will be in relation to hs2 and the airport. I don't think there's really that much between Sheffield and Leeds apart from that. Good luck to them.
 Share this content via...
Jim Hardie   517 #135 Posted October 31, 2018 The council did make a bid for it and we made the shortlist.  Are you sure?  The shortlist is now: Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Greater Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool, West Midlands
 Share this content via...

Bob Arctor   11 #137 Posted October 31, 2018 Sheffield was on the long list but didn't make the short list. There was some hope that Sheffield would get to host one of the creative hubs but those have gone to Bristol and Glasgow, so it looks like there might have been a decision made based on geographical spread, rather than having a hub close to the HQ. Suggesting that the decision has owt to do with HS2 and the airport is likely hobby horsing. Doubtless every other decision that doesn't go in Sheffield's favour in future will be attributed to those by some people.
 Share this content via...
Baron99 Â Â 774 #138 Posted October 31, 2018 Swings & roundabouts. Â We lost out on C4 but Sheffield got McLaren & Boeing, as well as the Advanced Manufacturing Centre. On the same day Leeds get 200 C4 jobs, mostly already filled by existing workers from London, Leeds is looking to loose a few hundred with the restructuring of NHS Digital: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/uk-england-leeds-46043752 Â Couple these job loses with those that are due to go at Leeds based ASDA & cash strapped Leeds Council looking at the possibility of shedding up to 2,000 jobs by 2020, then Sheffield's employment prospects don't look so bad. Â Let's also remember that Sheffield is also one of the highest rated cities for retaining its graduates.
 Share this content via...

Both have a couple of universities and are served by the M1, both more or less the same distance to Manchester (ie media city). You could, COULD suggest Leeds is a tad more cosmopolitan but really the airport and hs2 are the key differences. I think a couple of C4 shows are produced in Leeds but would that swing it? Toss of coin maybe?
 Share this content via...

That and a skilled workforce are the only two factors.  Do you really think a guest coming onto channel 4 news is going to fly into Manchester, then get the 60-90 minute chugger over to Sheffield, for the sake of a 5 minute interview? Or get the slow diesel train up from London and back - a 5 hour round trip?
 Share this content via...
