There is actually an over-supply of parking in Sheffield city centre at the moment.

It was Max that claimed there are no spaces. I merely pointed out that this could be due to insufficient numbers of spaces available to those who have little or no choice.

That's why the likes of NCP are selling parking at 50p per hour, because they can't fill the spaces. If there wasn't enough parking and spaces were all full, the prices would be a lot higher.

If your evidence is that NCP currently charge 50p per hour on Wellington Street I do believe, then why do they also charge £4 per hour on Arundel Gate?

Because people are lazy and drive to the first car park they see, so supply and demand comes into play. Wellington Street is quite hard to access at the moment unless you know where you are going due to the roadworks. I'd be surprised if their prices didn't go back up once the roadwords are finished as access will be improved once more.

I suspect the Uni staff who wont cough up for a permit (vastly cheaper than private parking) are going to find their free parking on Clarkehouse Rd and Crookes Valley Road will soon be on a meter.

Might stop the group who park up early and sit with the engine running in case parking services come round.

Might free up some space for people who don't want to park up all day but need a space down there for an errand

Might stop the " i must just go and move my car" interruptions in meetings

Then again they'll probably just filter up to Commonside and surrounding streets and fill those

And who pays for the enforcement to ensure that the turnover actually happens?

To do it effectively across the city, it would need more staff than the council currently have, so costs would rise above the £4m per annum that Parking Services now costs and there would be nowhere near enough income to pay for it.

Are you happy for your Council tax to increase to pay for "free" parking?

Well all the council vehicles seem to be able to park wherever they want .On top of that

Lets hope the council employees and councillors all pay like the rest of the citizens , I mean having unfair advantage is not very social is it;)

Because they can. They will charge at a level which optimises the amount they take.

The Wellington St one has been under utilised for a while since conversion of the office space above which meant they lost a lot of the contract parking which used to predominantly fill that car park. It filled up quickly once they dropped the charge to 50p/hour.

Why should it increase when SCC still make a vast profit from charges and fines. In the financial year of 2014/15 SCC the parking account summary was: £7.3 million in income and £4.3 million expenditure leaving a £2 million balance surplus.

You mean the "vast" surplus that ranks them at 58th place in the league table of local authority parking surpluses? I'd think that gives you a clue as to just how cheap parking actually is here.

For Local Authorities, parking charge increases aren't about making more profits, they are about demand management. They can't lawfully increase prices to earn more surplus income.

Check your arithmetic by the way, £7.3m - £4.3m = £3m not £2m

It feels a lot like not only SCC but everywhere are trying to cost the common motorist out of the centers (Can sort of understand this) but ultimately off the road.

I'll be up for re-newing the car soon and I honestly have no idea what to get.

I didn't say they could.

I'm not sure why you think he should.

In any case, you didn't ask a question, you made a statement. One without any foundation in fact, as it turns out.

If it makes you happy, all of the council employees that I know all pay for their parking.
