Cyclone Posted June 2, 2017 Posted June 2, 2017 So it's not the price that's the problem, it's the lack of space (although there's loads of space in reality).
Guest Posted June 2, 2017 Posted June 2, 2017 If parking in the city centre, which this rise doesn't affect, is so expensive then why aren't there many empty spaces? So because people are using and paying for the parking spaces, that means they have no gripe with the cost of it??
Planner1 Posted June 2, 2017 Posted June 2, 2017 Because there is already insufficient parking provision for the people who want to shop in town and those who also work there. There is actually an over-supply of parking in Sheffield city centre at the moment. That's why the likes of NCP are selling parking at 50p per hour, because they can't fill the spaces. If there wasn't enough parking and spaces were all full, the prices would be a lot higher. ---------- Post added 02-06-2017 at 13:16 ---------- Make it a maximum stay of say, two hours then. And who pays for the enforcement to ensure that the turnover actually happens? To do it effectively across the city, it would need more staff than the council currently have, so costs would rise above the £4m per annum that Parking Services now costs and there would be nowhere near enough income to pay for it. Are you happy for your Council tax to increase to pay for "free" parking?

apelike Posted June 2, 2017 Posted June 2, 2017 Why should it increase when SCC still make a vast profit from charges and fines. In the financial year of 2014/15 SCC the parking account summary was: £7.3 million in income and £4.3 million expenditure leaving a £2 million balance surplus.
Cyclone Posted June 2, 2017 Posted June 2, 2017 Which legally has to be reinvested in parking services.
max Posted June 2, 2017 Posted June 2, 2017 I called it when they put in the hunters bar parking tickets. "Its only 20p" was many people's response. ---------- Post added 02-06-2017 at 12:44 ---------- Because there is already insufficient parking provision for the people who want to shop in town and those who also work there. How would you provide extra parking space?
apelike Posted June 2, 2017 Posted June 2, 2017 Which legally has to be reinvested in parking services. Not necessarily, from SCC data it can be spent on: Provision and maintenance of off street parking Funding public transport Highway and road improvements and maintenance Reducing environmental pollution Improvement and maintenance of public open space Provision of outdoor recreational facilities open to the public without charge It also states: "Any surplus income from the parking account is currently spent on Highway Maintenance."
Flexo Posted June 2, 2017 Posted June 2, 2017 Drivers of electric vehicles can get park without charge in the city centre. Drivers of polluting vehicles must pay. https://www.sheffield.gov.uk/home/parking/apply-parking-permit/green-parking-permits

Fair enough, it's a relatively limited list at least, they can't spend it on running Ponds Forge or large lunches for councillors.
