Why's it called the eight-foot way? Is it going to be full of spiders?

;-)

Sounds like a type of Roman (or very early) paved road:

Maybe the old Halifax road was one of these 'eight-foot ways'? Makes you wonder what happened when two carriages met each other...

It should be called The Nuclear Arms.

I always said that nuclear arms could cause significant improvements to Parson Cross.

My bit of banter has been deleted from this thread!! everyone else's gets to stay. That seems a tad unfair.

Ok guys, you've had your fun, now it's starting to get insulting towards the people who live in the area. It has a proper name, it is to be used and the fun poking is to stop.

Apparently it was a local name for the 'ginnels' between streets, taken from fairly mundane architect's description:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firth_Park_(ward)#Parson_Cross (scroll to the bottom)

Shame there's no citation for it but there you go...

By the way it is stretching a point to call it Parson Cross considering the even-numbered side of Halifax Road is actually in S6, and it is bordered only by Chaucer School's playing fields. It's as much Wadsley Bridge/ Foxhill really...

Correct, although I've only heard the term used, city wide, on the inter-war council estates. The Gennils on these estates were originally surfaced with 3foot x 2foot precast concrete flags, laid 4 course wide. 4 courses of flags equals 8 foot, hence the name...

...strange name for a pub tho'
