2017 General Election candidates (Sheffield)

"Labour Party imploded" You should look beyond the Mail, Sun, Express, Sky News for your information.

Are you trying to say that they didn't hold a vote of no confidence in their democratically elected leader?

Or that the consequences of that was a significant loss of confidence in the Labour Party by the general public?

It'll be interesting to see if the Green's Natalie Bennett is "in it for the long-term" in Sheffield Central, as someone remarked earlier. She was a shockingly poor performer as Green Party leader, and she's managed to reduce the Green's percentage of votes in Central quite dramatically this time. Maybe she'll stay and try to be a local councillor, which may be a more appropriate level of operating for her.

Why the Greens swapped a very credible local candidate in 2015, a local councillor Jillian Creasey, for someone who had no links to Sheffield previously is a mystery. I guess Ms Bennett thought it was a winnable seat and she does desperately want to be in Parliament apparantly. I'm not sure if she was working in Sheffield - I got the impression she worked for the National Green Party in some capacity in London as she's been seen swanning around Parliament (with a pass to which she wasn't entitled according to Private Eye).

The local Green Party deserves someone better, and with strong local links, as their candidate.

you can but it will be sent on to your MP

i must say you sound rather immature to believe it has gone to hell when he has only been elected on Thursday, why would you not trust your MP when you dont know what kind on MP he will be.

It rather begs the question, why did so many people vote for him to be an MP when they had no idea how he would represent them?

All I heard was that he didn't even turn up to the hustings. It looked a lot like he didn't shake hands with any of his opponents when the results were announced either. Anyone know anything about him?

I can only hope for the good people of Hallam that he isn't one of the same sort of Labourites who do this sort of thing.

Glad he's not my MP. Even though I don't vote Labour, I'm not opposed to having Anne Coffey represent me.

To be fair to Natalie, she was out campaigning for the Green Party on Saturday. But I suppose that was convenient if she was planning to get the last train back to London on Saturday night.

Perhaps you're just impressed with very privileged very well educated Public School types, Just like Nick Clegg, the very eloquent articulate politician who reduced his party to a rump grand total of 8 MPs in 2015. I have no idea what the Lib Dems stand for anyway other than Tory lite.

There are some stark differences between the Lib Dems and both Labour and Conservatives.

The primary things are that we are Liberal and Democratic.

Whilst the Conservatives have more liberal elements they are largely socially conservative. More than half of Conservative MPs voted against the equal marriage act for example, which was written by a Lib Dem, by the way.

Lib Dems differ too from Labour. Whilst Lib Dems believe in social justice, fairness and equality of all, they don't see state intervention as the answer to every question. They don't for example support the snoopers charter like Labour do. Socialism as a construct is by nature regressively authoritarian. Socialism is the end goal, regardless of the impact. No discussion, no compromise. The Lib Dems believe in doing what works to help people the most, in the best way.

To be fair to Ms Bennett, I rather think she was living in Sheffield mainly full time, up Norfolk Park way I believe, but her work was not local but for the Greens in a national role. I could well be wrong and also she'll put down roots here for the long term. The impression from Private Eye was she wanted desperately to be an MP and, after the last election after she'd stood down as Leader of the Green Party, tried to hang on to her access privileges to Parliament she had enjoyed as Leader by using a pass to which she wasn't strictly entitled. I'm sure someone from the local Green party will be glad to correct any factual inaccuracies in this thread.

.

Maybe they took one look at Nick Clegg's voting record and decided that anyone could do better than that.

Oh... and maybe they appreciated the fact that he didn't bombard them with poor quality, negative campaigning leaflets.

And, maybe they saw what I saw, a new face with bags of enthusiasm and some energy to put into the constituency.

Jared is the candidate so many people on Sheffield Forum profess to want: a working person, born and bred in Sheffield. Well, Jared is a working man in event management which means that he doesn't start work until the evening and works straight through until the early hours of the morning. We had trouble finding a time which suited all candidates and the only one that the others could all attend was when he was working.

Oh that shaking hands thing? He has cerebral palsy with little or no control over one side of his body. Makes carrying a speech and shaking hands sort of difficult.

I'm not a member of the Green Party but can confirm yes, she does live in Sheffield, and yes, in the Norfolk Park area.

well maybe they did know as they had met him my issue is why Katie implies she cant trust the new bloke as hes hardly been in long enough to judge him.

i believe clegg lost through a number of reasons

hes still blamed for going into coalition with the tories/tuition fees etc

his campaign seemed to be vote for me to anyone else

he took Hallam for granted especially since the last election hardly turned up to vote

Yes I know, but I have rarely thought Sheffield forum representative of Sheffield nor that those members live in Hallam in particular.

I agree there are many reasons, and I know he has been attacked on this in particular. Apparently people close to Nick have said he has a very good legitimate personal reason for not being able to attend as much as he would have liked at the beginning of the last parliament, but he didn't want reveal it or to use it as an excuse/garner sympathy.

Did his personal reasons for not being able to vote, also result in his campaign team's deluge of negative propaganda?

To be honest, he's been a poor constituency MP for years and he was beaten by a more vibrant opponent. It would do you and the rest of the Lib Dem machine well to accept that.

As far as I'm concerned, whether she has a house here or not, it was a cynical attempt to get into parliament on the back of the tree-feeling issue.

Unfortunately The Greens misread a small vocal minority's views to be more representative of the central ward's views.

I've found Paul to be an excellent local MP, but equally so could have voted for Shaffaq, Lib Dem candidate, as a good guy with genuine local connections. No need for Natalie whasoever.
