Who are the five best players in Sheffield football history.

Recommended Posts

Speaking as an 'Owl', Len Badger should be on the list, the only one Sheffield born. Also 'Hodgy' who was from just beyond the border.

No John Fantham or David Layne Tofty ?

Not room for everyone including Finney, Froggatt or Don Megson

Since I've been watching Wednesday (for 36 years) I'd have to go for the slightly boring and predictable early 90s picks :

Waddle

Hirst

Sheridan

Nilsson

Palmer

For entertainment value Curran and Di Canio were brilliant but just miss out on the top 5. For the other lot, I'll admit that Deane was very good but not in the same class as Hirsty, he's the only one of theirs that would have got anywhere near our early 90s squad.

I think both clubs lack of top flight football might be the reason for that, one season out of 24 and 17.

I don't think the current ones average mate, its just playing in a league below what some of the names you mention played in.

Chris Woods....seriously..?

Arrived with a big reputation and it took 50 minutes of his debut against Villa until it dawned on most Wednesdayites that he couldn't catch cold let alone a ball...he cost us derby matches and a cup final amongst others...

I thought Woods was a half decent keeper but when he dropped a <removed> it tended to be a big un, I saw him have a superb game at Goodison once where he singlehandedly kept Everton at bay and we won 0-1.

Would never be in a best players list though.
