Does anyone know the procedure to sign on and how long it takes before it's sorted?

Thanks

You can do it online. It's really easy. Step by step. You can have payments backdated as well, so even if it takes a while to sort you could be paid the difference anyway.

For JSA use:

https://www.gov.uk/jobseekers-allowance/overview

When you have filled it all in they will make you an appointment at your nearest job centre. It doesn't take all that long, depending on where you live I guess and how busy they are.

A few weeks tops.

Any longer and someone screwed up.

I believe it takes about 6 to 7 weeks to come through, though things are changing all the time.

For a PIP claim it's about 16 weeks before you get a decision, then months waiting for an appeal date.

Out of interest, what are the rules on claiming JSA. Is there a limit to the assets you hold, eg redundancy payments or cash in the bank?

If you have £5000 i belief it is or more in savings you can't sign on as you have money to live on, so if you got that kind of savings you don't need a few quid a week from job centre

If you have sufficient NI payments from your previous employment over the last year, you can be entitled to Contributions Based JSA for the first 6 months.

This is NOT affected by savings.

Without sufficient contributions, you may be entitled to Income Based JSA.

This is reduced by £1 (per week) for every £250 of savings over £6,000 until £16,000 at which point, you will get nothing.

Those figures are for a single person.
