atticus   97 #13 Posted February 8, 2017 Did you just bash those words on a keyboard without actually thinking about this? Its common knowledge that government grants to local government have been cut, those are to blame for CT increases. One council area down south wants to increase CT by a whopping 15%.  Its ok there's no need for the good folk of Surry to panic ,they have been bailed out by their mates in Government. They'll probably be able to reduce council tax after todays back hander. atticus   97 #16 Posted February 8, 2017 She got questioned about it in PMQs today and failed to answer 6 times  Corbyn had a rare good day at the office today. Its a sad state of affairs when a Government knows it can get away with shady deals because the opposition is so weak.
 Share this content via...

This is separate to that.  Surrey council were going to have a referendum to get approval to raise council tax by 15% to fund social care. After whatever deal was done with Conservative central office, they've changed their minds.
 Share this content via...

The point I was trying to make is that the Government have done this before.
 Share this content via...
Revel   10 #22 Posted February 8, 2017 Using the FT spending cuts checker, which adjusts for inflation, SCC has had a reduction of 15% between 2010 and 2014, considerably less than the median of all councils. It's a falsehood to think we've been cut deeper and harder than anyone else. Bromley for example is a Conservative council and has had around 40% cuts from spending £520m in 2010.  Exactly. Sheffield has got off pretty lucky compared to other cities...  Sheffield: 15% (2010: £970M. 2014: £829M) Leeds: 17% (2010: £1.28BN. 2014: £1.07BN) Liverpool: 19% (2010: £970M. 2014: £789M) Newcastle: 25% (2010: £575M. 2014: £431M) Nottingham: 25% (2010: £598M. 2014: £445M) Bristol: 25% (2010: £785M. 2014: £585M) Manchester: 26% (2010: £1.06BN. 2014: £788M) Birmingham: 27% (2010: £2.4BN. 2014: £1.77BN)  Incompetent council. Cyclone   10 #23 Posted February 8, 2017 (edited) Because other councils take a larger cut, and Sheffield only gets a 15% cut, it's somehow incompetence when the money isn't enough???  Some people would blame SCC whatever, and probably then vote them back in at the next election.  ---------- Post added 08-02-2017 at 22:27 ----------  The FT site says £920 to £829 million.  The latest round of Government cuts mean £350m has been slashed from Sheffield Council’s budget in the last six years.  Different figures also being bandied about though, that was from Mar 16...  In 2016-17 our revenue budget is £1,378 million.  In 2010 the gross revenue spend was 1,480 million. Funded like this Specific Government Grants 687 47% Council House rents 123 8% Fees, charges and other income 196 13% Central Government Grants 278 19% Council Tax 196 13%  This year More than half of the money (53%) comes from central government, 8% comes from locally retained business rates. Income from Council Tax only covers 13% of the spending. A further 26% comes from charges for services, such as council house rents and entrance fees.
