A quick lick of paint/new windows would improve the extorior of most of these buildings, but neither council or the tenants/owners care enough to do so.

That last paragraph sums it up perfectly, the buildings themselves are fine, but they seem to get left to gather dirt and grime over the years and nobody seems to care about cleaning them up, I suppose it wouldn't generate anymore money so why should the council care

Fitzalan Square is not really a 'square' as there are properties on only three sides. The High Street side doesn't count and even the old Post Office site takes up one side of it's own. However, some thing should/could be done as to this place being a civic blight. I have been to many places in the U.K. and indeed the world and have yet to come across a town or city that isn't proud of it's square or squares. Even London glorifies them (and why not !).

I'd be more likely to visit Debenham's on the Moor if it was cleaned up outside

Trafalgar Square only has 3 sides too and Piccadilly Circus has no clowns or trapeze acts ;)

My friend used to live in the flats above Subway here, even back then the building was past needing a lick of paint.

Where did Debenham's come from? I never made any mention of any businesses, we're talking about the buildings themselves regardless of what's put in them, if they're clean on the outside and not full of grime and dirt they'd at least be appealing to look at
