The Consequences of Brexit (part 2)

Recommended Posts

This is false. The recession was supposed to be a reaction to the decision to trigger art 50. Not the official triggering which only signals the technical start of the negotiating period. What possible mechanism could cause a recession following the technical start of the 2 year negotiating period?

The certainty.

The Treasury's report says it is from the triggering of Article 50, not the vote.

No it wasn't.

In his famous Zurich speech of 1946, Churchill said, ‘We must build a kind of United States of Europe.. The structure of the United States of Europe, if well and truly built, will be such as to make the material strength of a single state less important'

Reason: so if one state falls to fascism then it can be contained.

And nobody in their right mind like that politics.

Unfortunately those people are being voted into power. Conservatives are being drowned out by the far right.

Trump has appointed as his chief of staff the owner of a website that provides a platform for white supremacists.

Erdogan has imprisoned 145 journalists. He's also imprisoned members of the judiciary.

They all claim to represent "the people". Anyone who disagrees is an "enemy of the people".

Have a read of this article in today's Guardian:

What has become of conservatism?

I see at least as many parallels with the socialists of the world rejecting democratic results they don't like. If anything this is more dangerous.

Erdogan is of course a threat to justice, liberty and democracy, what has that got to do with any of this?

You're still wrong about the treasury report.

Yup. Although on WTO MFN rules on tariffs by sector, and given that we operate a trade deficit with the EU; the EU will have to pay far more in tariffs to the UK government than we'll have to pay them.

So in a nutshell the EU will be very keen to negotiate a free trade deal which would allow then free access to the UK market and are unlikely to put too many stumbling blocks in their own way.

I have no idea. Depends on what the prevailing mood is in the EU voters as much as anything. If they're feeling secure economically they'll happily hurt themselves to hurt us. If they're insecure they'll cling to anything we offer to boost their economy.

Of course there's the French Presidential election next year. That looks like a choice between the so called "centre-right" and the an authoritarian socialist bigot or so called "far right".

Er, but they have 27 countries to spread the pain. If the deal causes them pain they probably wouldn't care if it causes more damage to us and takes longer to recover. That's a long term game plan to establish your economy ahead of the competition for much greater gain later.

Mark Carney plan for Brexit gets cool response from Gove.

Not sure what this news item is saying. Gove, is a former cabinet minister, a person without power. What is May doing?

Why is Carney coming up with a plan, and not May?

You actually thought the people of the country that created the greatest empire in the history of mankind would be incapable of functioning outside of the EU?

you may have noticed that the world has moved on since then and while we may be capable of functioning we may not be capable of functioning well enough

No, I don't think he has . . . and he's probably ruined another pair of trousers now.

So far they have consistently said that there is absolutely no chance of access to the free market unless we also accept free movement.

If we do that, then a good portion of the reason for leaving has been lost and we've created economic turmoil for absolutely no good reason. And if we don't then we are most definitely the losers.

Well enough for what exactly? What is the going rate for selling a nations' sovereignty nowadays?

The remainers seem hell bent on forcing a general election. I think they actually believe the country is having second thoughts about the decision to leave the EU... how out of touch can they be? If a general election is called then it will see Labour and the Lib Dem's decimated and parliament will be a sea of blue and purple. It is crazy self-destruction.

No. It can make no economic sense to refuse free trade. It may make short term political sense to some.
