Chemical neutering of dog?

Recommended Posts

Anyone know the rough cost of this and would you go down this route?

Internet seems full of stories (good, bad and vague) but it is hard to know find out which are recent and info like what drugs were used and how did behaviours change

Why would you want to do this? It doesn't lower testosterone so won't change its behaviour. I don't know if its permanent in older dogs. It may prevent testes developing in younger dogs. Either have the dogs testes off or leave them on.

Our first German Shepherd was fairly soft natured being show lines rather than working lines. Someone tried to attack me and the dog protected me. He realised I was a bit afraid so became a little too protective when I was nervous. He wouldn't bite unless we gave him the command but we had him castrated to try and calm him down. He was only about a year old but it took ages for him to calm down. We also had to give him (and me) some intensive training and socialisation to get him to be more relaxed.

We have had two bitches and two more dogs since this, only the bitches have been spayed. We have left the dogs in tact. Training and understanding your dogs should be more helpful from a behavioural point of view than castration. Physical castration will drop the level of testosterone but chemical castration won't. I'm not even sure its allowed in the UK.

Do you want him sterilised or is it drive / aggression issues you are trying to address?

My friend had an implant for her dog that lasted around 9 months. I think she said it was around £200 for a spaniel size but don't quote me on that. I think I would be tempted to go down this route with my dogs in future rather than jumping straight to neutering as neutering was a bad decision for one of my dogs.

Are you talking about a dog or a bitch? What went wrong when one of your dogs was neutered? Keeping both dogs be bitches in tact also has risks, as does e dry thing in life.

I had this done to my old dog about 9 years ago to see if the aggression he had started to present at 18 months was a learnt behaviour or a result of testosterone. The drug used was Tardak and it is designed to "mute hypersexual behaviour in male dogs, including sexually-related aggression, and which lasts for up to one month". This was enough to see a visible improvement in my dogs behaviour so I had him neutered(which doesn't take the testosterone levels down to nil immediately I had to wait a further 4-6 months).

Cost wise I seem to remember it was about 40-50 for an injection. It was called chemical castration but wasn't really as it wasn't permanent but it confirmed for me that my dog would be better off neutered as he was very stressed by all the testosterone coursing through his body.
