.....the focus on building shopping centres , markets or student flats......

the police are no longer to be seen patrolling the streets.....

I love it when people switch off their brain and have a good rant about reality while ignoring all of it.

Meadowhall was planned back in the 80s, your golden era when there were no thoughts of shopping centres. Sheffield has had a market for hundreds of years. There are a lot more students about these days than there were in the 80s when clearly you weren't one. And the council has no influence on police numbers. That's the government's job.

Yeah, cos it's so good at the moment!

It is for me. My tax contributions have come down significantly under this government. Not to mention the current housing status is really working in my favour.

I never gave Meadowhall a thought as that is and was a private enterprise with no Council funding what so ever.

My thoughts are on the disastrous City centre plans that have been on going for thirty years and are still only in the planning stage.

These grand schemes have cost the rate payers of this City millions ,millions that could have been spent on Social housing and infrastructure.

The New plans for a reduced City centre shopping scheme may be getting under way soon ,mind you the first building to go up is a bank so it seems .

So much for a new retail area.

The old (new) fire station site that was to be a new John Lewis store (perhaps no one bothered to ask them) now stands empty with another new fire station around a couple of hundred yards away . again millions spent , materials and recourses wasted for what?.

I have been thinking about the great tradition that this City once had in being seen as a socialist stronghold.

We had four or five M.P.s in the eighty"s who raised the red flag over our town hall and stuck up for the working classes through thick and thin.

So what happened ? as it seems as though they all became part of the establishment , Most of them can now be seen hob nobbing it with the big wigs in various areas , they can be seen in the best seats at sporting events ,or grinning with a load of capitalist directors at the latest property grand opening , some of em now live in grand housing or areas far removed from the people that they vowed to support through thick and thin.

They take consultancy fees ( back handers;:hihi:) and now mix in circles far removed from the ones they used to visit when plying for the votes needed to get them in Parliament.

Was George Orwell or Robert Tressell right when they wrote how working men change when they reach the pinnacle of power ,do they forget who and what got them there in the first place and most important why has Sheffield now surrendered to big business ,why is all the focus on building shopping centres , markets or student flats when we have people sleeping on the streets due to lack of any new social housing being built.

They tell us that the Government is to blame ,but did the Government tell them to build a new shopping centre or market, or pull down Don Valley (millions spent in the assumption that the money will be returned in rents and rates over many years.

The public toilets are shut down, also care homes for the elderly, playing fields and parks are neglected , the home helps and care workers are made redundant , council estates are neglected and litter strewn , the police are no longer to be seen patrolling the streets ,and - while this is going on grand shopping malls are being built or planned. All at the expense of the least well off in this City.

Yeah, cos we shouldn't have rich people in Sheffield, we should all be poor!

So, you're complaining because nothing has been happening and even when something is happening, you're still complaining.

Did the thought not occur to you that some of the retail space will have offices above it?

The old (new) fire station site that was to be a new John Lewis store (perhaps no one bothered to ask them) now stands empty with another new fire station around a couple of hundred yards away . again millions spent , materials and recourses wasted for what?.

Do you really seriously think that no one would have spoken to John Lewis about the plans?

Also, the old fire station site isn't empty. It has a 130 space car park on it which returns a nice steady income to the council while the site is awaiting development.

What is going on the site.

What did John Lewis reply as they have not made any public statement as to wanting to move from the excellent site that they occupy .

And last but not least,

Why are there not any clear way signs on the Holme Lane tram route side roads if it is compulsory) (sorry to bring it up but we are still waiting for an answer from planner on that one)

All that does it point out that socialism, and trying to live in some political bubble when the rest of the country changes around you doesn't work.

I recently returned to Sheffield and was amused to find that many of the MPs representing the socialist republic aren't socialist enough and are facing possible deselection. It was also amusing to hear the reason why Labour lost the recent council bi-election in Mosborough was because the candidate wasn't a strong enough supporter of Comrade Corbyn.
