Sheffield Council braced for more job cuts.

Council says it has already shed 25% of its workforce.

Does that mean they previously had 30% too many staff than currently employed and if so what we're they all doing and how come they can function at all Now?

Had someone come for interview and I asked why they were interested in the position being offered, especially when the salary on offer was so much less than they were currently on. They said they were fed up sitting around with very little to do. Took them on and best worker we ever had.

Whatever next? :suspect:

Far from it. If you use council services you will know how much the cuts are affecting services. With reduced manpower a lot of the previously essential work is no longer happening, and people are suffering as a result. Private, profit making companies are filling the gap, but they are expensive and there are many who simply cannot afford them.

Personally, my biggest bugbear is Libraries. Our local one is now only open 2 days a week and is staffed entirely by volunteers. I really appreciate the work these volunteers are doing and they have managed to keep the library from closing down altogether, but I can't help thinking what a kick in the pants it must be for the ex-employees who are now without a paid job, but can see their job being done for free.

It's not the volunteers fault though, it's the councils.

The volunteers are just people from the community who desperately want the library to stay open.

Some time ago I was copied into an email exchange between a senior councillor and a council officer. It started before 6am,and I've received emails from that officer after 8pm.That's the sort of hours they are having to work to keep things going.

No, it just means they provide less services. So fewer social workers, care wrokers for the elderly, librarians etc. Ofc you can say who cares, but then thats one of the reasons Rotherham happened unchecked.

The council would just blame the government.

Im wondering why someone should be paid to do something someone else will do for free?

1. Thats because the majority of local government funding comes from central government and not CT. Thats where the fall in revenue has come from.

2. Because you can get a better quality of person who has more skill and experience plus they are more reliable, which provides a better service.

It's hard work doing nothing all day. You look at your watch and it's ten past eleven and when you look again two hours later (or so it seems) it's quarter past eleven :heyhey:

Keynote speech and introduction by Margaret Palmer, long time Sheffield Care/Social Policy legal campaigner

Your Voice Will be Heard

Last year in July a number of Sheffield residents who access Adult Social Care, their families and allies came together to discuss the difficulties they face, their fears that the system was is crisis and their concerns for the future.

Their experiences and personal stories were shared, such as the story of how one elderly person was living in her own wastes, her daughter working sixty hours a week so could not cope, while others have been offered 're-ablement' or nothing at all and are frequently trapped in their homes. Short hours has meant difficulties in maintaining staff and recruiting, other issues were sick and disabled people paying up to 100 pounds a week to the Council towards their care, while others even more affluent paid nothing. Others with numerous types of conditions spoke how they had to battle just to get a few hours of support a week.

It means that the council has had half of its funding removed by central government. Sheffield is one of the worst affected councils by the Tory austerity cuts.
