South Yorkshire Mayor Welcomes £13 Million to Tackle Homelessness

South Yorkshire’s Mayor, Oliver Coppard, has welcomed the Government’s announcement of an additional £13 million in funding to help local authorities combat homelessness and rough sleeping. The funding will be distributed among Sheffield, Barnsley, Rotherham, and Doncaster councils to bolster efforts in prevention and support.

A Commitment to Address Homelessness

Mayor Coppard emphasised the importance of safe and secure housing as a basic necessity for everyone:

“My mission is to make South Yorkshire a happier, healthier, and safer place for everyone. Safe and secure housing is the very least people deserve. Yet, there are still far too many people in South Yorkshire whose lives are blighted by homelessness and rough sleeping.”

The Mayor highlighted how the new funding would enable earlier intervention to prevent homelessness, provide more resources to support vulnerable individuals back into stable housing, and reduce reliance on temporary accommodation, which can create further instability for families.

Local Solutions for Local Challenges

Mayor Coppard stressed the importance of tailored approaches to tackle homelessness effectively:

“Whilst funding is vital in tackling these problems, I know the Government also recognises that we need to develop local solutions because we know our communities best.”

He pledged to work closely with all four local councils, key partners, and the Government to create long-term, practical measures to end homelessness and rough sleeping in the region.

A Step Forward

The £13 million investment represents a significant opportunity for South Yorkshire to address one of its most pressing social issues. By combining increased funding with locally developed strategies, the region aims to provide meaningful support to those in need and make strides towards ending homelessness and rough sleeping.

Further details on how the funding will be allocated and implemented are expected to follow.

Cracking down on antisocial  behaviour in the city centre sounds a reasonable move until you realise it will just move the problems elsewhere. I've just been to the local shop for milk and people were openly selling drugs outside Lo's pharmacy

I'd like to think you're right but I suspect the undesirables these days would just get a bigger stick

A lot of this so called ‘anti social behaviour’ from the homeless is actually the behaviour of homeless people with mental illness.  Unfortunately there’s very little support for the mentally ill these days and that has resulted in an increase in the homeless on our streets now.

Exactly my thoughts.! My son bought a pack of sandwiches and gave them to a man begging. He threw them over his shoulder. Of course they just want money for drugs don’t they ?
