If we could only establish once and for all which (of the 'far too many' looking lost and forlorn) in our great city are genuinely homeless (as opposed to the fraudulent low life oxygen wasting chancing rancid scumbag beggars) then even a curmudgeonly tight Yorkshireman like myself may change the habit of a lifetime

And therein lies one of the main problems.  I'm pretty sure the majority of genuinely homeless, rough sleepers are known to the outreach teams.   However, the issues that have caused many to be on the street are complex, and not all will be able to work with the charities and statutory organisations set up to help.  It will take much more, in terms of specialist, long term, intervention in many cases to help those people.

The only solution to the problem is to not give them any money but offer food drink etc instead. A genuine person would accept that help with open arms those that are not will not. Also it will mean the money doesn't inadvertently get spent on drink and drugs.

They can easily get food and drink from other sources (eg Bens Centre) -  they might just need money for other things (and not just drugs / alcohol) - I'm certain all my money doesn't get spent on food and drink (and housing).

So all the bleating about being 'Hungry and Homeless' (from 95%+ of them) is the complete hogwash many of us always suspected.

I'd like to know what the "other things" are before even (remotely) considering donating any money I've earned (and been taxed on) to these people.

Toiletries, gym session (for shower) clothes, shoes, bedding or sleeping kit.

There are plenty of necessities that are just forgotten.

Lots of thing besides food.

Toiletries, over the counter medicines,  haircut, bus fare, postage stamps,  socks, hot beverages, anything to hellp them keep warm, dry and safe....  and probably more besides.

I don't think you've imagined yourself in their shoes  if you haven't realised this.

Hate all negative and sometimes downright nasty comments on this topic!! A homeless lad came up to me the other day he said had been sleeping and some1 had beaten him up well kicked him in face and stolen his sleeping bag. I gave him £2 towards.  Ok some would say im gullible but his face had dried blood on it would people suggest he did it himself?! I also buy big issues off some and some people say its funding peoples drink and drug habits, they only make £1.50 per mag have to sell hell of a lot to make decent amount! Ok some begging will be addicts but in that case maybe give them food or drink (not alcohol). I always think it could be a member of my family and how would i feel if people just walked by and looked at them like scum! Try walking in other peoples shoes instead of being smug! Ok could say why dont they get a job but lot of people even if not got habits have mental health problems so whose gonna give them a job! There but for the grace of god go i!!

Well then, maybe they'll have to save up.
