Android devices will either crash the dialer, or simply not show anything if the radio or modem image has become corrupt.  The reason I mentioned HTC in the first instance, is if the images have become corrupt, the repair process is a lot more long winded, and requires the bootloader unlocking and achieving S-OFF.
