My mate had a remap from the bloke behind the Attercliffe cop shop, no issues. Don't see the point in them myself, just buy a car with the kind of poke you want...

It's an underworld kinda thing, you buy an average car with low insurance, have it remapped (which is visually invisible) and you get the performance without the higher insurance premiums.

If you have a claim, the insurance assessors don't normally hook up the car to a computer to see if it is "factory spec"

Some re mappers claim not only more power but better economy !

If you opt for a sports exhaust and a bigger intercooler as well, then you are well advised to inform your insurance because they are visible.

I'm seriously considering remapping an old focus to see if it could go up hills without needing a running start or dropping a gear.

Not really about 'poke' in the usual sense

All run of the mill car engines are de tuned by the makers to suit the car, emissions, economy, etc. etc. Even the weediest engines are capable of much more grunt and can be tuned to give it either at low revs or high revs.

The downside is, it won't last as long as if it were de tuned, it is not uncommon after a while to get cracked ports in the cylinder head, bearing failure, or premature head gasket failure.

The trick is not to push it too far, a bit more torque is useful but use it only when needed.

I once had a Landy that had been seriously tweaked by a well know specialist before I got it. I got it to 189,000 miles before it needed a new head, it had nearly 230,000 when I sold it still going strong.

I just had my BMW 120d XDrive remapped by SLT in Attercliffe. They were very reasonably priced for a proper remap and did the job while i waited (<1hr). The guy programs the maps himself and he was doing them while i was there.

Car now pulls like a train getting around 1-2 extra mpg, but he confidently told me its only pushing an extra 100mbar boost so not to over-stress the turbo.
