Firth park pond

That's a lovely photo Peter, and it shows how much it was used by all the people in the background. That was taken the year before I was born and I can remember having picnics there when I was young.

Thanks francypants,

My sister was born around the time of the photo so is near to your tender years :) . I remember the novelty of pushing her in her pram to the pond on a couple of Sunday mornings, from Grimesthorpe, before we moved to Shiregreen for an extra bedroom. It was good to see the boats on the pond. However, as she screamed most of the time on the second outing, the novelty immediatedly wore off.:hihi:

Hi francypants,

We moved to Foxglove Road (Flower Estate) in 1958. Mother was a keen gardener and it always was tidy. Big old rose bush in the front garden and privet hedge, probably planted by my great aunt and uncle who were the first tenants when it was new. As you say, a nice place in those days.

Sadly my dad died in 1960. When all my siblings had married and left, mother moved to Mason Lathe Road having collected the keys on 6 Aug 1976, the year my sister married and moved on.

Here Mother is on that day looking delighted about picking the keys up bless her...

Her house was at the top end near Concorde Park, just around the bend where Oaks Fold Road becomes Mason Lathe Road.

Small world eh?? :)

Hi Peter, I'm going to get told off for going off topic !! ...... But,

I bet your mom knew an aunty + uncle of mine. ( Freda + Harry France ) They lived on Mason Lathe Road just up from where Oaks Fold crossed Mason Lathe Road early 60s onwards. Harry died ages ago but Freda still lives there.

I went to Woolley Wood School then later on Hatfield House Lane School.

Well it's only slightly off topic eh. It is next door to Firth Park :).

Your aunty and uncle must have been only a few doors below my Mother. She lived on the right about half way between where Oaks Fold crosses Mason Lathe Road and the tight left bend near the park. She may well have known them as she was very sociable.

She moved from there into a nursing home in about 1997 and died in 1999.

My paternal grandparents lived on Millthorpe Road at Firth Park. Grandma remarried in later life and her son (my uncle) took over the tenancy with my aunt when grandma moved to Horninglow Road. All passed on now :(

When we moved from Grimesthorpe I had only six months schooling to do before leaving so I decided to stay and finish at Earl Marshall/Owler Lane school.

Peter.

Peter,

My maternal grandparents lived on Horninglow Road for years when I was a baby.

Incidentally I got married at St Thomas's church, Holywell Road, Grimesthorpe in 1974.

Horninglow Road, well, the world gets even smaller eh?? :)

I married my late first wife in 1966 at Wickersley Parish Church and then lived in that area for many years.

Here's your church on Holywell Road...

Hi francypants,

Circus training centre now eh? No change there then :hihi:

Cherry Tree Crescent Wickersley eh. I can't believe how much smaller the world is getting!

My youngest son and his family live a few hundred yards away from there on Hazel Grove.

Also my late first wife lived with her family on Church Lane, again only a few hundred yards away. We were 'courting' from age 17 in 1961.

On subject, I hope everyone will be interested in the following bit of history re Firth Park and Pavillion and the pond. I started work in the Head Offices at Firth Browns in 1959 aged 15 so the history has a special connection for me. Read the section on Firth Park on the first link.....

The pond can be seen illustrated left of the pavillion, up the steps and to the left. You may have to click 'Zoom image'.....

Yes Peter it's a very small world.

That is a very interesting piece about Firth Park and surrounding areas. It's surprising what you don't know about areas where you've lived for years and years.

Thanks very much.
