Is Ibiza still the party island it once was?

Recommended Posts

In the late 1990s I went sunny Ibiza the so called ' party island' plenty of clubs and plenty to pull. The club music of the island made its way into the UK and the US charts and scoring the odd hit now and again. Nice place that had the hippy lifestyle that creates a liberal environment to the point I saw a young lady drive past in the nude. Is the party over now and Ibiza just another Spanish resort?

I haven't been, but my friends have told me it's very expensive. I remember them telling me they paid ~£20 for entry into a club.

Magaluf, Zante and Ayia Napa seem to be the popular clubbing holidays now.

No destination will be the same as it was in the late 1990s.

Enjoy your memories and either go back to find out if you still like the place or explore somewhere new.

Ibiza is an island; it was in and around San Antonio where the clubs were. Last time I went was about 2002 and some of the big clubs still existed, but there wasn't much of a vibe going on, just lots of 18-30 holidays and puddles of vomit about the place, with guys hawking stolen watches in the street outside Irish pubs.

Night was better, but I felt a bit disappointed after forking out about 40 quid a piece to get into places like Pacha and Eden it just felt a bit.. meh. Lots of chav blokes and girls in bikini tops, no hippie vibe, quite the opposite, the places had a whole 'what you looking at' feel about it and I saw a few fights in both clubs.

It was different then to my first visit in 1998, which had a far better feel to the place even though it was being heavily commercialised even then.

I'd imagine these days San Antonio has all the appeal of a hotter Blackpool..

Ibiza is probably one of my favourite places on earth, its beautiful but im too old for the clubbing scene now but i had a blast in Pacha, Space, Amnesia, Eden etc back in the day. I even got to DJ there too which was a huge deal for me back then. Its still the party place though with San Antnio's West End still the 18-30's place to be but the more clued up ones head to places like Ushuaia, DC10 and Sankeys in Playa d'en Bossa, Its all about to change tho i fear as the officials are seeking to stop outdoor parties there. Space is also closing its doors for good this year

Yep I agree, been too many times to remember. Ibiza is now better than ever if you know where to go, as above and also for a more intimate but hippy vibe you can't beat Las Dalias some nights. All the best places are off the tourist trail, and don't tolerate the young brit abroad type behavior.

If you went to the big name clubs as a youngster and find its not the same nowadays then it is you that has changed not the "vibe" :-))

There is something for everyone and every age group, but if you are not 18 anymore, don't go to the places they go to.

Couldnt stand the music, but I used to love a bar crawl starting at the ship inn, working my way through the west end.

Im nearly 49, but im tempted to head back there next season and give "Ground Zero" a try :headbang:

Yes I loved Ibiza didn't think I would but there you go, Ground Zero was brilliant highlight of the night dancing to Rammstein with a group of Germans we were the last to be partied out!
