markfor Posted September 17, 2016 Posted September 17, 2016 Someone has told me there is a proposal for a rugby club to take over some of Bole Hill Park. Can anyone give me any information about this? Thanks
HRUFC-Chair Posted September 17, 2016 Posted September 17, 2016 Hi there, I'm Tom the chairman of Hallamshire RUFC and I can help with this query. In short the answer is no, we are not taking over the Bole Hills park. The longer answer is that we are working with the council and local groups to place a rugby pitch at the top of the park to play on during the rugby season, much like the football teams who play at the bottom of the site and the BMX Track and Bowls club. We will be renting the pitch from the council but are putting the money into its creation from finding funding ourselves. We've spoken to a lot of the park user groups and passing users and have had a pretty positive response so far. The idea being that as a community club Hallamshire RUFC will play a wider role in the life of the park, helping out with events and work days as well as hopefully providing rugby union for a variety of ages in the area which currently there is no provision for. So in short we're not taking over, we're joining the other groups already using the park and want to be a positive contributor toward its future. Hope that Helps Tom - Hallamshire RUFC chairman
Lurgh Mor Posted September 17, 2016 Posted September 17, 2016 Good luck Tom. Are you planning on more than one XV? Where do you play/meet/ train now?
HRUFC-Chair Posted September 17, 2016 Posted September 17, 2016 Lurgh Mor, we train the next two weeks at Bole Hill next to the Northfield road entrance from 7pm. All welcome. After that we'll be moving to the astroturf pitches at King Edwards lower school. We try and run two adult XV's when we can, always numbers dependent. The more the merrier though.
Longcol Posted September 20, 2016 Posted September 20, 2016 If you've got the wind on your backs you should have a decent chance of kicking penalties from your own 22 - but into the wind and you might find a conversion from in front of the posts ends up back at half way! Good luck
The Manager Posted September 20, 2016 Posted September 20, 2016 thought there was a football pitch at top of park as well as the bottom near bmx track
HallamRU Posted September 21, 2016 Posted September 21, 2016 If you've got the wind on your backs you should have a decent chance of kicking penalties from your own 22 - but into the wind and you might find a conversion from in front of the posts ends up back at half way! Good luck You have obviously never played rugby at Stocksbridge! You get every wind, rain, sun, hail and snow during a single game! But on a serious note if this all comes together as a club we are very excited, we have been nomads now for several years and the chance to build a true community team is a fantastic prospect for us.
webby1968 Posted September 21, 2016 Posted September 21, 2016 Hi I would like to make a comment on the reply from the hallam rugby club. I live next to the bole hills and I am on there twice a day 7 days a week. It was not until last week that I heard about this proposal from another concerned dog walker. I speak to a great number of fellow dog ? owners who like myself are on there 2 times a day 7 days a week. For a considerable time. We are on there come rain ,sun and snow and none of these people like me had heard of this also like myself some of these live next to it. Please forgive me if I hold a certain amount of scepticism when you say you have spoke to park users. Who were they ? because I suspect the people are occasional users who only attend on special occasions and are not the real users of the park. Let's get one thing strait i have no issue with rugby being played. When football is played we the dog owner respect it and keep away from that area during the game. My issue is with the information I have been given regarding the proposed fence with a view to deliberately excluding dogs from the area. I like most dog owners detest those that do not clear up after their dogs and get enraged by the idea that we are being penalized because of the no marks that abuse the bole hills. All children are not banned from the park because of the minority that abuse it so do not treat us decent dog owners in this way. I and all my dog owner friends will do everything we can to oppose this , I am going to be contacting the councilor that has been in my opinion secretly colluding with hallam rugby club to keep those who use the bole hills in the dark to raise my concerns and plan to raise a petition. Embrace the dog owners do not alienate us.

Embrace the dog owners do not alienate us. I really do appreciate your feedback, I am not the chairman of the club so am sure he will have his own opinion. From my point of view as a player and founding member I can assure you that we as a rugby club have the community and area's best interest at heart. We are taking a dilapidated building and turning it not only to usable rugby facilities but also somewhere that members of the public can use for meetings, gatherings and any other ideas people come up with in addition to sharing it with other local sports groups such as children’s football. Yes there had been a mention of a fence but I can assure you we have absolutely no plans to even explore erecting one, it’s just not feasible so please don’t worry about that. As for you comment about park users and speaking to them I didn't attend the local meeting again our Chairman did but a week last Saturday I was on Bole Hill starting to refurbish the old taxi rank building and while waiting for the skip to arrive I spoke to several different people both on their own and with other dog walkers, everyone expressed how pleased they were that firstly something was happening to the building and secondly a community focussed group would be moving into the area. I have also spoken to many others both before we train on a Tuesday evenings and even tonight while I was waiting for a tradesman to work out a quote. What I believe will happen is that once people are aware a team are playing on a section of the park I.E the pitch is marked out they will make sure that any dog mess is cleaned up, the vast majority do so already. Most of our players are situated within 1 mile of Bole Hill which is one of the main reasons why it’s such a good match. One person raised the point about the fence and as soon as I said that it really isn’t in our plans to do that she understood. One final point, you mention about a ‘councillor that has been in my opinion secretly colluding’ I really have no idea what you mean at all about this, this is simply a local sports team who want to find a base and a pitch and settle into the surrounding community, please feel free to PM me and if you are ever free I would be more than happy to meet with you and talk in person, I am sure it will go some way in alleviating your fears.
