My sons Gaming PC went bang, flashed and had a burning smell and is now deceased !!

I've contacted someone who says it sounds like the PSU has blown and they have given me a quote to come to the house and upgrade it to a better unit.

The quote, which I will not say just yet, seems rather steep. What I am looking for is a rough ballpark figure as to what the cost could be. A home visit is not necessary as I can easily take the PC to a repair outlet.

Any one have an idea ?

Thanks.

If the PSU went it is likely it fried other parts. A cheap PSU is always a liability. Not sure what the quote was, but just replacing the PSU + parts and labour should come in around 100£ for a serious business, 70£ for a DIY semi-pro.

If the power supply blew, it's doing it's job and blowing instead of letting the rest of the computer go bang....

cheaper to replace a £60+ PSU than a full computer...

But yes, it's likely it is the power supply, you shouldn't EVER buy cheap PSU's (for this very reason) - Anything above about £50 for an 80+ Bronze 500w PSU is fine, Check what make/model the PSU is and let us know (still dont need to let us know the full quote) - we can just say what we would charge... :)

Thanks for the advice guys. I really don't want to open the case up as I know absolutely nothing about PCs or electronics. I know that isn't very helpful but I don't want to do further damage !!

ask whoever you're getting to repair it, what make/model they are intending to install, then research online the rough cost, add approx £30 for labour (if they are coming to you, includes fuel etc)

Should only take approx 30 mins max....

Thanks for that. The labour charge they quoted was way more than that, they also charge a £20 call out fee and they said 1-2 hours. I'll be going elsewhere I think !!

I really appreciate the advice from everyone, it's so easy to get ripped off when it's not your field of expertise.

Obviously the 30 mins is if that is the only issue, if its replaced and the PC still doesn't work - then further diagnostics will be required to determine the issue and could end up costing more....

But the likeliness of that is slim...
