Sounds like rust on the discs. When that happens to me it's gone 5 seconds after pressing the brake pedal.

Though reading your description you seem to be saying it's better when it rains.. so probably not the same thing.

Yeah there fine when wet so can't see it being rust on disc

Warped disc's possible, has your road been resurfaced recently or do you go anywhere it has, the small loose chipping fly up and get lodged between pad and disc only dropping out when you move squealing noise from a standstill or power washed away, is there any scoreing on the disc’s, pads can chatter until you press the peddle the pistons should be lubricated with copper grease to make them move smoother hence the water is lubricating their movement but dry’s off after use, rust is only superficial and would not cause a noise, are your pads the wrong ones you can get pads that are too hard and only soften up with use as they get hot again the power wash get's rid of brake dust so your problem goes till it builds up again. It’s a problem to eliminate by trial and error.

brakes have been checked by a garage measured on gauge and everything to eliminate warping and scoring pads and calipers have been greased and sanded to get rid of any glazing all this worked for 30 mins then noise come back jetwashed it other day noise went for a few hours and today it rained and noise stopped garage just says use it as is but its doing my head in

Don't use copper grease on pistons or anything that comes into contact with rubber seals, it's oil based and will make the rubber swell and cause problems.

Use silicon grease instead, that why they supply a little tube of silicon grease with caliper refurb kits.

You really paid a garage to strip, clean, measure, sand and re-grease you brakes???

Why not just replace them, can't have been much difference in the price.

replace what ive no idea what is causing problem and it was only £30 to have them done better than risking £160 on pads and disc to find same fault is still there

Did they at least track the problem down to a certain wheel?

Was the wheel bearing checked?

Just put it down to brakes and just use as is was verdict doesn't sound like a bearing noise had them go before was different noise

You might have a flexible brake hose collapsed inside and not letting them release properly when you take your foot off the brake. They act like a one way valve sometimes when theyre collapsed internally. Usually happens if someone uses a clamp to stop the brake fluid leaking out when you have work done.

If they release a little but not fully it will sound better in the wet as it lubricates a bit and will be helping to keep things cool.

I had a ford escort with the same problem.

Can you see what condition the inside faces of the discs are in without removing them?(sometimes there is a dust shield on the inside so you cant see).On some cars the inside, smooth shiny face of the disc slowly disappears from the outside to the inside.Where it has disappeared it is replaced by thick rust and this causes the grinding you speak of.Discs and pads are cheap and easy to replace, especially if you buy new ones on Ebay.I have just done a Micra and a Daihatsu Terios.Total cost Micra £32, Terios £54.
