Magilla   510 #2 Posted July 28, 2016 Sounds like rust on the discs. When that happens to me it's gone 5 seconds after pressing the brake pedal.  Though reading your description you seem to be saying it's better when it rains.. so probably not the same thing. MEC176   10 #4 Posted July 28, 2016 (edited) Warped disc's possible, has your road been resurfaced recently or do you go anywhere it has, the small loose chipping fly up and get lodged between pad and disc only dropping out when you move squealing noise from a standstill or power washed away, is there any scoreing on the disc’s, pads can chatter until you press the peddle the pistons should be lubricated with copper grease to make them move smoother hence the water is lubricating their movement but dry’s off after use, rust is only superficial and would not cause a noise, are your pads the wrong ones you can get pads that are too hard and only soften up with use as they get hot again the power wash get's rid of brake dust so your problem goes till it builds up again. It’s a problem to eliminate by trial and error. Edited July 28, 2016 by MEC176
 Share this content via...

martss   10 #6 Posted July 28, 2016 Don't use copper grease on pistons or anything that comes into contact with rubber seals, it's oil based and will make the rubber swell and cause problems.  Use silicon grease instead, that why they supply a little tube of silicon grease with caliper refurb kits. geared   303 #7 Posted July 28, 2016 You really paid a garage to strip, clean, measure, sand and re-grease you brakes???  Why not just replace them, can't have been much difference in the price.
 Share this content via...

geared   303 #9 Posted July 28, 2016 Did they at least track the problem down to a certain wheel? Was the wheel bearing checked?
 Share this content via...
munster   10 #10 Posted July 28, 2016 Did they at least track the problem down to a certain wheel? Was the wheel bearing checked?  Just put it down to brakes and just use as is was verdict doesn't sound like a bearing noise had them go before was different noise
 Share this content via...
yellowperil   10 #11 Posted July 28, 2016 (edited) You might have a flexible brake hose collapsed inside and not letting them release properly when you take your foot off the brake. They act like a one way valve sometimes when theyre collapsed internally. Usually happens if someone uses a clamp to stop the brake fluid leaking out when you have work done. If they release a little but not fully it will sound better in the wet as it lubricates a bit and will be helping to keep things cool. I had a ford escort with the same problem. ivan edake   13 #12 Posted July 29, 2016 Can you see what condition the inside faces of the discs are in without removing them?(sometimes there is a dust shield on the inside so you cant see).On some cars the inside, smooth shiny face of the disc slowly disappears from the outside to the inside.Where it has disappeared it is replaced by thick rust and this causes the grinding you speak of.Discs and pads are cheap and easy to replace, especially if you buy new ones on Ebay.I have just done a Micra and a Daihatsu Terios.Total cost Micra £32, Terios £54.
