Erdogan heading for London to claim asylum. Strong rumours only at this stage.

Do we have room for any more asylum seekers?

Will Boris be there to greet him with a poem?

Can you imagine Teresa Mays thoughts right now?

Interestingly there were some on here a few weeks back saying Turkey was a great and safe place for your holiday this year.

No, thankfully and in all seriousness though the Foreign Secretary is really just a kind of mascot.

Foreign policy is driven by the PM really. This a bigger test for May than Johnson.

A faction of the military has tried to take control.

Erdogan addressed the nation by I phone urging the public to take to the streets and resist.

They did what he said and the coup is being beaten back by the rest of the army and the pro Erdogan people.

There have been casualties.

Apparently a military jet has shot down a helicopter used by the rogue faction

Apparently they are army colonels who don't like the way Erdogan is moving the country towards more Islamification.

It is in the constitution that the army is responsible for keeping Islam out of Turkey.

that's a very ambitious aim, considering Turkey is close to being 100% Muslim and there is no country anywhere in the world whose borders contain proportionally more.

Pretty much forget it, I'm afraid.

Although, if you're flying to a coastal resort, and Erdogan has full control by dawn, call the airline. Reckon it would be fine, and the exchange rate will probably be brilliant.
