Who will succeed Cameron?

Recommended Posts

I wonder how many people voted for Labour in 2005 thinking they were going to get a chance to vote against the EU in a referendum, then were sold down the river by Brown?

probably none

Are there still some within the consevative party who cannot stand the idea of a woman leader? If so, there will be some noses out of joint if it finishes up with May and Leadsom being the two preferred choices.

They are clearly the best two candidates and the Conservatives didn't have a problem electing Mrs Thatcher.

Andrea Leadsom spoke very sensibly on the Marr show a few minutes ago and has the potential to be a very good Prime Minister.

Rachel Johnson in the Sunday Mail says Gove is a 'political psychopath.'

So far he has received less backing than May or Leadsom. He has made himself immensely unpopular. For a year he says he'd be a terrible PM then at the last minute decides he's still better than the rest! Nutty.

When Mrs Thatcher was chosen, I believe there was some disquiet shown by some members. But they had a choice of a man or a woman, and those who specifically didn't want a woman were beaten in the vote. Now, anyone with those feelings would not have a choice.

Johnson's history is very interesting. Read about it last night. He could never haven been PM.

Leadsom has a colourful history too. More about her as this contest progresses no doubt.

May will win. She is the only one who can find a way to unravel the mess IMO and take this forward using one nation conservative principles.

Leadsom is not a one nation conservative. Her interests are narrow and very much focused on the financial sector. She can't unite the country. She would divide it further.

Leadsom is actuslly anti-Brexit

Looks like another politician who like Johnson used the leave campaign as a leadership vehicle

There are three men and two woman in the contest, so anyone with those feeling you describe has a choice of three men. The best person should get the job.

He has made himself unelectable.

Ex-remainer Leadsom is being targeted by the Mail now. May has by far the most support. She might even get the gig without it going to party members at this rate.

Andrea Leadson explained on the Andrew Marr show that in 2013 she was campaigning for the EU to be reformed which has not happened, that is why she decided it was best the UK should leave the EU. Andrew Marr agreed when challenged that he was only quoting part of her speech in 2013 which did not paint the full picture of her views at the time. Andrea Leadson will be targeted because she is a serious challenge to Theresa May to be the next UK Prime Minister.

Then at least learn what her name actually is :hihi:

She's second favourite behind May with a lot less MP support. I doubt she poses a serious threat.

She could change her mind again.

You are not going to get a pure pro-Brexit Tory leader.

Wheels came off a bit there didn't they

Yes, I made a spelling mistake of her name :) We will have a better indication after Tuesday's first round of voting. If Theresa May gets well over 50% of votes in the first round, then it would make sense for the remaining candidates to withdraw and not put the vote to the Conservative members.

Andrea Leadsome campaigned for the UK to leave the EU and Theresa May didn't which makes her more BREXIT than her rival. Wheels have not come off anything.
